I really can't believe the Chinese government continues to spout this drivel and still believe that anybody is going to take them seriously.

Of course such radar would be as good at spotting Chinese missiles as it would NK missiles. Maybe that's the problem?

hey China, do as you please and continue your aggression against everyone in the world, and the rest of us will do nothing or make none of our own advancements. Yeah China sck this! Why don't the world pull all investments out of China and watch the country implode!!!!!!!!!!

0 ( +2 / -2 )

SFjp330,

Your concern is definitely noted. OF course a conflict between the 2 gov't is bad for business. But there is always one that is in need more than the other. The things you cited such as destruction of properties is a tiny and insignificant thing internationally and domestically. That is one of the things I mentioned about Japan using this as leverage when no one really care. Every business has its risk. These businesses going into China knew that risk. And any subsequent new businesses going into China from Japan, which is still ongoing at a rapid pace, also knew of such risk and is responsible for its own safety.

Sure, the gov't and police should protect and intervene, which they did in China. Rioters were arrested and compensation were paid. Don't forget, its not only China that has these problems, or have you forgotten about all those bombings and kidnappings in the Philippines and the Red shirt/Yellow shirt riots in Thailand? Japan has heavily investment in those countries as well and losses do happen.

This is what I called complacency with Japan and the Japanese mindset. You guys have been living too peacefully and forget that the world is a dangerous place. Not every country would adhere to your comfort level or homogenous standards. Especially in Asia where Japan had made a lot of enemies in the past. If your country's corporate and businesses felt the risk is too great to handle in China, then you should leave China and move somewhere else. Mind you, when you leave, they will stop buying as well. So you can ignore the greatest and biggest market for the forseeable future or simply take what's given and negotiate for the best.

These disputes are really easy fixes. Both nations are just letting pride getting in the way. Well, maybe both of you needed someone to hate. Which is not bad when there is such outlets. Its only natural to have someone you really can't stand. Alrighty then crack on.

highball7 Sep. 25, 2013 - 03:03PM JST The Chinese really don't care about Japan at all. Just look at what they are developing. None of that is toward Japan.

The Senkaku/Daioyu Island dispute is a conflict between two goverments and not the private citizens or businesses. China has many territorial disputes with other countries. How is the 20,000 Japanese companies operating inside China related to the island dispute? Does Chinese goverment have a right to destroy any foreign companies operating inside China? After the Chinese fishing trawler incident, there were reportly over $126 million dollars damages to the Japanese businesses in China. Did you see any looting and damaging of Chinese businesses in Japan? None. What is a purpose of long term investment planning by these foreign companies if Chinese goverment does not give them security? The Chinese goverment did nothing to stop it but encouraged it to create major damages to their businesses. There was widespread destruction of Japanese businesses in China.

Japan won't be needed to install X Band Radar System if bunch of corrupted Communist Government was gone forever and practice true democracy in Main Land China.

Honestly, the leaders of Communist Chinese Government are unpredictable and they are great threatening to Japanese peoples, Japanese sovereignty and Japanese interests in Communist China.

Communist Chinese Government is more danger to Japan than N. Korean Government.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Its clear that its Japan that's being pushed to the corner by its own failing as well as China's growing economic power. Don't forget this, China's military budget is still small compare to its GDP. And China has been increasing its military budget under these 2 premise:

to compensate for its lack of military investment and development through the 70s-90s. They spent less than 1% of its GDP during those years. That's why China's military is so backward because they consciously chose not to follow the Soviets way. Another reason is they simply can't afford it.

Its only since the end of the 1st Gulf War that China realized it must modernize its military. Before than its all about Mao's theory of more heads than bullets. After the 1st Gulf War, both the civilian and military brass in China realize US can easily wipe China off the face of this planet. IT was at that time that China decided to start investing somewhat significantly (1.5%).

China got lucky that Russia was going through its bear phase and got on a lot of the Old Soviet military tech at firesale jump out of the window cost. That propelled China to be somewhat of a deterrent and they started investing in their own R&D as well as stealing and copying other country's tech and develop into their own. This is the mid 90s to early 00s.

Right now, China is still spending less than what its suppose to according to the US standards. They are simply spending respectively toward their own economic, population, as well as oversea asset investment capacity. They need to develop a Blue Navy because of the vast oversea assets and oil supply in Africa and Middle East as well as its vast oversea workforce all over Africa. Libya was a great example of how a poor navy and airforce can't do to help its own people compare with what US or even the French can do.

The Chinese really don't care about Japan at all. Just look at what they are developing. None of that is toward Japan. Its about building on things that must be built according to the pace of their growth.

Its Japan that always have this feeble mindset that everything China does is about Japan. They can careless. This who disputed island crap is just high tea to them. Everything they are building is to protect their own assets and serve as a counter-weight against Russia, EU, and US. That's why China's focus is always with S. America and Africa. If they want, they can REALLY get chummy with the French, Italians, and Germans on a very high level. The fact that they only use EU as another counter-weight and vice versa against the US is clear on what China's agenda is, to stand at least on the same platform as the US so the their nest egg is protected.

China lashing out at Japan over anything or in this case the radar is just a reminder to Japan that they are watching your every move. Which really means they are watching US's every move because the radar is part of the missile defense system controlled by USAF and USN. We all know Japan likes to anticipate by working small steps after small steps just to get one or two points across and use that as leverage. Most of the time, these so called leverage only really exist in Japanese's mind. The rest of world really don't care.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Well I think it is safe to say that Japan has not pushed China to any kind of military build-up but that the opposite is happening right now. I guess for the Chinese government Japans strong responses over the Senkakus have been something of a surprise. Now the development is biting back in the sense that an advanced radar system will take away one of Chinas advantages. The planned new 9 Japanese satellites will also give a much better view of Chinas movements. Basically some parts of the Chinese strategy are backfiring. The only way forward in the race with the US must be to put much more efforts on more advanced tech and ships and sooner or later push the US out of the area by taking political control over surrounding areas. Maybe by trying to renew the old way of vassal states. There are two basic ways to accomplish such a long term strategy without ending up in nuclear winter. Making the US economy fall even more so that all expenses need to be cut or to convince nations to kick out US bases and military installments. Just a few ideas about the development.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Now that Japan has a superior radar system, China has to think about improving its stealth aircraft, missiles and other military hardware so they can go undetected and that costs more money.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

This is not at all surprising. Japan is a servant of America and will do whatever America tells it to do. After all it is also costless since America is supplying the equipment.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Oh I don't know - how about as recently as 1959? When was the last time Japan atta-oh wait, that's right they haven't.

I think even Japan would get the memo if China was launching a rocket, they pride themselves in showing off everything they can do, so don't worry, we will hear about it.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

@Tokiyo--When was the last time China attacked anyone?

Its hardly Chinese military facilities that give me concern. Its not China always in the news as we learn of their secret war actions only through Wikileaks.

About the last thing we need in this world is Japan mistaking a manned Chinese space mission for a missile and shooting it down. Even the North Koreans may one day launch a real satellite and we don't need that shot down either.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

Why not? god knows what China is up to with their military facilities. China is not innocent in the provoking aspect either. What they lack in support they overcompensate with brawn. Such a dangerous creature needs to be monitored

2 ( +4 / -2 )

@Tokiyo--And Japan does not need to encroach on China any more with enhanced radar capabilities. They already harbor a nation unfriendly to China that conducts spy flights right up in China's face. I am not saying China should be given anything. I am saying that if you provoke China, bad stuff is going to happen.

And guess what? Provocation of China has already led to China acquiring a navy that just ten years ago was practically nonexistent. There are people always calling for enhanced provocation of China. I believe those people actually want war. They crave it. And their influence is growing and we may all live to regret so much as giving them a thumb's up.

China is well contained. Anyone saying otherwise is trying to sell you a new conflict.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

Boxing in China? I don't think they need to expand anymore, not by a millimeter.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

The Japanese radar can only be used for defence,

@Scrote--No. It can be used for offensive targeting ie missile guidance. And I am sure it can be used to see into China as well.

In our rush to see China as the bad guy, let's not forget that boxing China into a corner will surely come with consequences, just like with anybody else.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

All bark and no bite, bashing China....lol

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

China should reel in its lapdog NK and shut the hell up. The balls on that country...

Also, China would suck at poker because it clearly tips its hand with these stupid statements. Talk about projecting.

Then again children with a new found power and toys tend to over compensate to show off and usually end up getting laughed at by the other children on the playground for acting like such twits and then go on to doing something even stupider to teach the other kids a lesson which in turn backfires on the stupid little showoff. Sounds familiar, yeah, but I wasn't talking about NK. China is still a problem to its own people and now they want to control others outside of their country. That's a child for you.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

`Mike45

If japan was fully democratic and renounced its past like Germany.

1)The style of Democracy is not just one. The based on its culture, religion, history, the size of a country, each nation may have its own democracy. Japan will never become fully democratic from your kind of point of view for sure.

2) Compare Japan to Germany is purely nonsense.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

The radar plan is for a defense reason which Japan has a right under our constitutions. China has no prat for Japan`s decision making for this issue. I wonder if that produces any incontinent situation for China? It is so funny that before N.Korea lashes out, China made a lot of noise for it.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Doesn't bashing China ever get boring? Guess not for some people.

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

If China had this capability, they wouldn't waste a second putting it into place. It seems with China , hypocrisy has no limits....

Well said dudeyes.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

looks like China wants their own version of the Dai-tō-a Kyōeiken and doesn't want japan to screw those plans up by being able to defend itself

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

This is a very good move defensively on Japans part, and yes Japan will become a major military power by 2016 once again, thanks to China and North Korea. This time because they have no choice but to.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

By the way, China still communists otherwise there were able to see that there is absolutely no advantages sending survelance ships in islands owned by other countries.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

yes japan, you are not allowed to do anything to stop a north-korean nuke sent with love especially to you, as has been promised by the NK-gov. if you dare to give any hint that you will protect yourself from another nuclear destruction, we, the all-mighty-China-gov, will be very very displeased.

the greatest danger to the world is china: there ain't a single thing not "made in china", and that government argues for japan to not even monitor the crazies in NK with their rabid nuclear threats. Chine lost it, big time.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

I think China should stop protesting and just start building a military the size and sophistication of the US military. Then others will be complaining, as we always here US is complaining about China's military spending, so much for transparency, just do it without telling anyone anymore. That will stop the media baggin China and trying to damage Japan / China relations.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

If during the post war years, the U.S. slowly disolved the emperors power after his purpose was served and not used Japan as a tool to stop the spread of communism, then perhaps there would be no need for a yasukuni and nostalgia for the good days of Imperial Japan. If japan was fully democratic and renounced its past like Germany did then they could be trusted to remilitarize. Japan as a step child of the U.S. will continue to escalate tensions because this is all Japan has ever known. The chance to change it all was passed up a long time ago. Will Japan ever become a soveregn country capable of decision making and joining the international arena as Germany and Italy did?

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

China again, blah, blah, blah ...

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Scrote,

Because that radar can penetrate deep into China's economic zone. Radio frequency is a physical entity and element down to the microscopic level. Much like the police can't use sonar or head seeking devices onto your property without getting a warrant. Or that you can file a nuisance complaint against your noisy/loud neighbors due to the travel of sound.

Its basic science.

Didn't Japan complain about the underwater Sonars setup by the US not long ago. Something about them being harmful to fishing but USN basically told Japan to be quiet. Then nobody talked about it since.

Same thing there. No need for anyone concern. China can complain and Japan will ignore. Then China will simply build more missiles and Japan will buy more pac IIIs. Its just a military industrial complex game.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

ScroteSep. 24, 2013 - 10:56AM JST

The Chinese often say their military build up is not a threat to anyone. The Japanese radar can only be used for defence, so I wonder why the Chinese are so agitated? They should stop meddling in Japanese affairs.. Well said.... China make nukes and missile and all kind of explosive and says ? it is for SELF DEFENCE ONLY... But if Japan or Korea or any other country make a radar to see the incoming Chinese missiles? then that is not allowed, Why??? I urge Japan to make more nuke than China since SELF DEFENCE Bla bla can be applied to Japanese missiles also....

3 ( +5 / -2 )

To take the other side, from a deterrent point of view, China does have a legitimate point for complaint. The radar does have a ABM function, which not only reduces China‘s ability to threaten, but also to deter. If we aren't all stuck in a US=good mentality, we have to confess they have a point.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

And the children continue to squabble in the sandbox.

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

AKBfanSep. 24, 2013 - 11:07AM JST

Jeez. Next thing they will object to Japan having any kind of military at all....."

They already do, except for themselves and North Korea.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

And once again, Abe&Co. sell off Japans independence and J-realestate for Americas biding. I wonder how many 100s of millions of yen made their way into Abes off shore accounts this time? Not that the Japanese people would object! Youre average salaryman takes a lot of pride in his governments effort to **one-up** the ever growing threat, from the "evil, vengeful China." What else would the Chinese love more to do than "get revenge of Japan?!" China used to be poor you know....so Im told. This radar is multi-functional, but its primary functions have very little to do with protecting Japan from N.Korea. This machine PRIMARY function is to serve as the eastern flank to Americas global, real-time balistic-missile monitoring system. This system which stretches from the western border of Russia...all the way to Japan. North Korea? Thats nothing any American should have to concern themselves with - it would take several minuets, if not a half hour for an inter-continental ballistic missile to make its way across the Pacific to even the remotest corners of Alaska... The "North Korea threat" is a selling point.

What the US is worried about is a colossal military alliance that could hypothetically stretch all the way from Finland to Taiwan. The US military-industrial complex is taking its sweet time dotting the globe with several dozen of the X-band radars.

Were China and Russia to send troops to Syria - this would give a good indication of just how capable to Russians and Chinese are at co-operating with one another.

I guess well have to wait and see...

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

“Some countries or blocs in the region, on the pretext of the North Korea nuclear threat, have unilaterally set up anti-missile systems or conduct bloc cooperation (with the United States),” Hong said."

If the PRC would keep their Korean pets inline Japan would not have to take steps to defend itself.....

Hey, I have a great idea, why not stop North Korea from launching those missiles and stop worrying what Japan does.

But, we all know that they will never stop the Koreans because they need them as a pawn.

The PRC is by far the greatest threat to world peace.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

Obviously the installment interferes with Chinas plans. A good thing with the statement from China/Hong is that they are becoming more open with their opinions. If they voice their opinions it is much easier to get a grip on what they want. Possibly this can contribute to reducing dangerous speculations on both sides. As long as there is barking there is no biting.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

quite strange if China support the idea that any country should not try any attempt to defend or prepare themselves against any threats from NK. to some extent it also means they also support NK.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Jeez. Next thing they will object to Japan having any kind of military at all.....

8 ( +9 / -1 )

The Chinese often say their military build up is not a threat to anyone. The Japanese radar can only be used for defence, so I wonder why the Chinese are so agitated? They should stop meddling in Japanese affairs.

14 ( +15 / -1 )

Step 1 - Create a contract obligating payment of a tithe to a corporate state entity in lieu of said entity providing certain protections and granting certain rights.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

China getting up in arms about this just makes me think that they're up to something shady, and I doubt I'm the only one. The only people who would object to a country improving its defensive capabilities are the ones planning to attack it. Besides, China has no right to dictate what Japan or America can or cannot do. Both countries make their own decisions, acting in the interests of their own people. China, you just worry about China, let Japan worry about Japan and let US worry about US. Quit rattling the sabres every time someone does something you don't like. China reminds me a lot of Argentina. There's even the island dispute. Britain has defended the Falklands and will continue to do so, and Japan will defend the Sekakus. I see no difference in the situation. Jog on China, and stop being so antagonistic.

11 ( +13 / -2 )

Hey let's locate it on one of the Senkaku islands where it can serve a dual purpose!

12 ( +14 / -2 )

"The facility will be staffed by as many as 160 U.S. service members and civilian contractors." There will be only a few US military soldiers stationed there. Most of the personnel stationed there will be contractors from Raytheon and Blackwater like the ones in Shariki base in northern Japan with the X-band radar system.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

"How dare Japan want to protect itself from our puppet state! This technology could also be used to protect it from us and therefore is a threat." - China

10 ( +11 / -1 )

China can protest and opine in any way or format. It also has the right to ask others or warn others of what China might do. Talk is cheap and it doesn't cost anything.

But that doesn't mean the US care one bit. We will build or ask our allies to build whatever necessary depending on our needs. Japan is basically a gigantic radar station and buffer for us at the 1st chain. Even though this 1st chain is not that potent anymore due to recent Chinese developments, its still is a good buffer. Then we have Guam, Midway, Australia as 2nd chain.

I will bet that when China built those 4 carrier groups by 2030 and sail along our West Coast, we will be voicing the same concern and issuing the same warnings. No big deal, quid pro quo.

-9 ( +2 / -11 )

Whatever happened to China's stance on noninterference in others affairs? They always bring that tired canard up when others speak of Tibet, Falun Gong, etc.. What is wrong with a country wanting to defend itself? This radar system allows Japan to detect any incoming missiles, presumably from North Korea but quite possibly Beijing as well. If China had this capability, they wouldn't waste a second putting it into place. It seems with China , hypocrisy has no limits....

19 ( +21 / -2 )

I don;t think China would protest if Japan just places watchtowers up with men using Lanterns to signal if they see a ship? oh - wait - that might be too provocative.....

11 ( +13 / -2 )

sfjp330Sep. 24, 2013 - 08:46AM JST U.S. reorientation to Asia is a reflection of 'Cold War thinking' and as a way to contain China's rise. However, China is >an important cultural and economic partner. Some in U.S., Japan and China may or may not like it. Nevertheless this >is a fact. Take a look at world history some time and every country has had its moments. It is the height of foolishness >to deliberately want to alienate China. We should be giving the finger to Germany, Italy, and Japan, instead, all three >are firm allies.

Sorry but that isn't going to happen. The United States isn't going to "give the finger" to our democratic allies so we can grovel at the feet of a militant dictatorship. China stated as a "rise" but has passed that now to become a "threat".

10 ( +14 / -4 )

I have to wonder about any country that would disapprove of defensive equipment. China, what do you have planned?

15 ( +17 / -2 )

More the communist China opens their mouth, more of nonsense and irrelevance it is. The advance technology will keep the bully China at bay. Japan must be smart using all deterrence capability against all aggressors. Vietnam and Philippine also needs this new tech as well, and tell China it is about internal policy as has been said.

11 ( +12 / -1 )

US really idiot.

-32 ( +2 / -34 )

U.S. reorientation to Asia is a reflection of 'Cold War thinking' and as a way to contain China's rise. However, China is an important cultural and economic partner. Some in U.S., Japan and China may or may not like it. Nevertheless this is a fact. Take a look at world history some time and every country has had its moments. It is the height of foolishness to deliberately want to alienate China. We should be giving the finger to Germany, Italy, and Japan, instead, all three are firm allies.

-30 ( +2 / -32 )

ok seriously, that's a stretch. Knowing what's going on is a threat to security?? China invalidates itself yet again

15 ( +16 / -1 )

China tends to see virtually all U.S. military activity in Asia as part of a plot to curb its growing military, diplomatic and economic power.

Lets not beat around the bush here. China should just say that they don't like the thought of America being on their doorstep as they bully their neighbours for territory.

Quite frankly though China can't have a say on what Japan does on its own soil. So they can jog on.

29 ( +31 / -2 )

The sheer nonsense that comes out of China with a straight face is unbelievable.

"“Some countries or blocs in the region, on the pretext of the North Korea nuclear threat"

Pretexts, like North Korea declaring that they would "nuke" the US? Or turn Seoul and Tokyo into a sea of forte, blood, whatever?

"“not conducive to regional nuclear non-proliferation and stability, and will cause an extremely negative impact on the global strategic balance,”

North Korea's nuclear program, threats and provocations, and China supporting it are what's not conducive to regional non-proliferation and stability. The only negative impact will be on North Korea and China's strategic capabilities. Installing a radar system does not cause instability and is in fact conducive to nuclear non-proliferation.

"China tends to see virtually all U.S. military activity in Asia as part of a plot to curb its growing military, diplomatic and economic power."

China sees all US military activity as the major obstacle to it's aspirations of military, diplomatic and economic dominance of all Asia.

"China also is highly critical of the U.S.-Japan military alliance along with Tokyo’s moves to upgrade its armed forces, saying they are steps toward a revival of the strain of militarism that led to Japan’s brutal invasion and occupation of China in the 1930s and 1940s."

While China continues to increase it's military capability and attempts to expand it's territories by intimidation of it's smaller neighbors and take over the entire South and East China Seas, making it the biggest threat in the region according to ASEAN.
