[China] said geological features dictated that China’s claim extended to the edge of the continental shelf off the Chinese coast, about 200 kilometers (124 miles) from Japan’s Okinawa island.

Riiight....and those big mountains that extend from India into Tibet (Karakoram range) must mean that China has no claim on Tibet after all, and it all belongs to India. Funny.

All these patrols, now fly by ...I'm getting the impression China is feeling out response times. Maybe Japan should put people on the islands and park a few ships closer to the territorial boundary that China keeps crossing. Right now Japan isn't asserting itself enough.

The Foreign Ministry said it submitted documents claiming waters extending beyond its 200-nautical-mile (370-kilometer) exclusive economic zone. It said geological features dictated that China’s claim extended to the edge of the continental shelf off the Chinese coast, about 200 kilometers (124 miles) from Japan’s Okinawa island.

The UN has repeatedly stated that continental shelf claims are unenforceable and will never be recognized.

Looks like China is going to launch a landing party soon, and the world will watch in horror as either the UN becomes irrelevant overnight, or we see war break out (or at least skirmishes)

Just a word about the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS):

I always wonder why only a littoral country directly facing a continental shelf can claim exclusive jurisdiction over it. Shouldn't resources on the continental shelf be shared by all nations sitting on the same continent?

"China's claim submitted to the U.N Commission but have no authority to resolve. DELETE THAT commission. USELESS and a waste of salaries.

The Foreign Ministry said it submitted documents claiming waters extending beyond its 200-nautical-mile (370-kilometer) exclusive economic zone. HOW ABOUT THE SCARBOROUGH SHOAL or SPRATLEY ISLANDS that belong to the Philippines if based on Nautical mile zone. That it meant it really belong to the Philippnes? Hehehehe..."

UN is almost as useless as that IWC

China's diplomats move step by step staking out their position. Very cunning. Not satisfied with the status quo, they wish to grab as much land and sea as they can. Rewriting the maps. This is called hegemony, but greedy and brazen.

De facto land grabs with a straight face. What should her neighbors/neighbours do?

Suddenly China sends this argument between Japan to the United Nations claiming that this is within their 200 nautical miles exclusive economic zone? How come now that they followed international standards? How about those within the South China Sea? The Scarborough Shoal and Spratly Islands is well within the Philippines economic zone and still China is claiming it with their so called 9 dash lines. China is playing the waters and countries around them should be careful negotiating with them. Basically, we cannot trust them.
