Pyroclastic flows are enormously dangerous, more so than lava flows as they move far faster than you can outrun them even in a car (despite what Hollywood would have you believe) and can travel considerable distances. They are what destroyed Herculaneum and Pompeii and if Mount St Helen had been near a town or city we would have a modern Pompeii. Luckily it wasn’t.

I think many will remember the 1991 Mount Unzen pyroclastic flow in Kyushu that killed 43 people.
