Coca-Cola to reduce power consumption of vending machines

Coca-Cola (Japan) Co Ltd and its 12 bottling companies said Monday they will make efforts to reduce power consumption in vending machines in winter to avert possible power shortages.

From mid-December until March 2012, the company will conduct energy saving measures by stopping compressor functions in the peak usage hours in areas serviced by Tohoku Electric Power Co, Tokyo Electric Power Co, Kansai Electric Power Co and Kyushu Electric Power Co.

In addition, for those vending machines installed outdoors that use lighting other than LED lighting, Coca-Cola said it will implement appropriate measures to reduce the number of light bulbs used for lighting. Also, it will continue to keep all lighting off for vending machines installed indoors 24 hours a day.

I am sure Japan can do with out VENDING MACHINES in the middle of rice fields, in the middle of no where all together. I guess this is a good step in the GREEN right direction for not only Coca Cola but for all of Japan, make those stupid vending machines that are OUTDOORS solar??

Why should there be vending machines when there is a convenience store in every corner?

Does anybody know how much energy one of these machines consume? Because I guess it's not the lighting the problem but the energy needed to keep all cans cold or hot at the same time.

This should have been done long time ago but was dragging their feet to do so since there was no incentive in doing so.

The energy cost of vending machines are charged to the property owners of the vending machines not the brands that install and replenish the drinks like Coca-Cola although they are the ones who goes around persuading people to lend them space so they can install them.

A few years ago I read that all the vending machines in Japan take the equivalent power output of one nuclear reactor.

So they're gonna turn off the refrigeration function of the machines during a period when its c-c-c-cold outside. How much power will that save?
