Compensation awarded over 102-year-old man's suicide due to Fukushima crisis

A Japanese court awarded 15.2 million yen in damages on Tuesday to the family of a 102-year-old man who killed himself in the face of an order to flee from his home amid the 2011 Fukushima nuclear crisis.

Wow....for some reason I am baffled at the apparently disproportionate size of the award in comparison to others given here in Japan for people much, much, younger.

They keep stating there have been no deaths due to the meltdowns, but shouldn’t all these suicides be counted? There have been literally hundreds of people who have killed term selves as a result of the relocation.

A bizarre outcome when previous court orders are so random, guess for a medieval justice system they acidendtely get one right once in a while.

"We send our sincere condolences over Mr Okubo's death and will sincerely deal with the matter after closely examining the content of the ruling," TEPCO said in a statement.

Tepco has been hand in glove with the LDP from day one. That will not change, and Judicial ruling is just lip service for a local family imo. The 150 odd American sailors suing Tepco for 545 billion yen in compensation in a Californian federal court I'm sure will do much better. The mere mention of Tepco makes my skin crawl, that wont change either.

They'll appeal. This was just a District Court Ruling. It will go to the Supreme Court, who after suitable mutterings of regrettable, unavoidable, etc., will overrule it. The SC is just another part of the nuclear village, and has generally sided with TEPCO and the government on issues concerning nuclear power.

that is about how much it cost in total for the death of my mother-in-law. Then there was the emotional cost. It’s nothing for a selfish company that builds a NPP by the sea against advice to save money, puts backup generators in the basement to save money, builds a design smaller than recommended to save money.

i guess it doesn’t matter to them, they split the company so the taxpayer will pay the comp.
