Contaminated water leaks from container at Fukushima plant

Just over one ton of water contaminated with radioactive particulates leaked from one of the containment vessels at the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant on Wednesday, Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) said.

According to TEPCO officials, the Advanced Liquid Processing System, or ALPS, which is being used to remove radioactive substances from contaminated water, experiencing trouble, TBS reported Wednesday.

TEPCO officials told a news conference that workers discovered the water leak from a containment vessel being used to clean out tanks filled with water already processed by the ALPS system. However, radioactive substances were still present in the water in the tanks, which started to overflow, TBS reported.

According to officials, the leaked water showed readings of 3.8 million becquerels per liter. Also, dangerous levels of radioactive cesium reading 9,300 becquerels were detected in the contaminated water.

TEPCO said none of the contaminated water was leaked outside of the building housing the storage tanks.

I wonder if anyone has made a proper website dedicated to showing a visual timeline of errors and mishaps at the Fukushima daichi plant? If so it must be getting pretty long now!

Good idea, but there would probably not be enough space to show them all.

There was another huge mistake discovered last Friday not reported here where workers flipped the wrong switch starting up four pumps and sending hundreds of tons of highly radioactive water into at least one basement of an unrelated and uncontaminated building. Was it an honest mistake, or sabotage? They still don't yet know.

Blundering blunderbuss, 3 years on and TEPCO still has yet to prove it can handle the most basic of actions responsibly. Yep start the reactors up as I have full confidence those in charge have less of an idea than I do. Nice to see the best they can do is inadequate.

I think TEPCO reach their limits to handle well the situation. It is overhelmed for them to recover.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

And still tepco is in charge of the operation :) A ton of radioactive water leakge ,,, hmm lets worry about that ,, and forget about a few hundred tons leaking contiounously / daily / since day one underneath those buildings .

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Not a day passes without some serious problems in Fukushima... Please understand Tepco that normally, you should all have been in prison for the last three years... I don't understand why these clowns are still in charge of the situation ?

All the reactors are offline right now and we're doing fine without them.

****all said and done, now it is high time in the interest of living beings one need to completely drain all contaminated water particles into some area where that contamination is completely defused, is there that kind of technology with TEPCO; if not ask USA IF IT HAS! see some how save living beings; or complexly close down Fukhushima like Chernobyl in Russia! that may be some solution, as radioactivity is so deadly for centuries it is said! May be chernobyl is some other kind of nuclear plant, but disaster management may be akin please examine how to handle disaster management like one said release some jailed due to failure of the plant some three years ago but please be as fast as you can; see that you cannibalize the plant

i believe there is water leaking every day. we just need a chart for the amount

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Bakarishan Unfortunately entombing the plant like they did in chernobyl wont work for fukushima cause there is an underground river running underneath the plant in contact with melted coriums and it keep carrying lots of highly contaminated water towards the ocean . Cleaning that water is not possible , even though they claim they clean it , ithere are no effective methods to clean all the radioactivity from the contaminated water . They are pouring more and more water into the plant to keep them cool and creates more and more toxic water which builds up the tank farm ,, meaning it cannot grow forever ,,, meaning in the end it will all go down the hill into the ocean They cant remove the fue3l rods from fuel pools on units with melted cores cause nobody can work in those plants , because the radioactivity will kill anyone going near them ,, Never mind building structures / construction and putting men to work on them for months , they couldnt even bring a robot to take a photo of the coriums so that we would have an idea where they are ,,, even robots get fried at those kinds of radiation levles. In short ; nobody has any idea how to solve this problem and all the fuel rods in those fuel pools are waiting to burn in open air by the next big earth quake ,, So its a pretty messed up situation , but if you ask the main stream media they will tell you "nobody died in fukushima so it all AOKAY "

For your alarmist reference: 1 ton of water = ~240 gallons.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

Pandabelle That is correct , aproximately ,, there are differences in different measurement systems but more or less 240 galons is a ton that they are talking about here . That s the whole fuss ,, while a few hundred tons of it leaking contiunuosly underneath the plants ,, :)

Besides the 200 tons last Friday...

Please stop this quickly. There's only one planet where we can live....

And you CONTAMINATE IT'S OCEAN WITH RADIOACTIVE PARTICLE for three years now.

Do you understand what you have done?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The amount of radioactive water leaking into the sea is literally (and I hating myself for this pun) a drop in the ocean. You could compare to dropping a thimble full of arsenic into a swimming pool.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

FAndango spoonmonkey Are you sure about that ? Why did they bother to build all that tank farm then ? How come radiation reached up to us and canada ?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

What a mess !!!

Just dump it into the sea already.... it will sit out on the sun and evaporate and go back into the atmosphere...

Just dump it into the city and that's it !!!!

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

whiskeysour, I'm sure you don't literally mean that, but I share your sense of frustration.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

They blew it. Yet again.

Hope this disaster gets resolved quickly. But that's not going to happen.

I feel guilty for enjoying so much of Tokyo's neon-lit sights, while all the while they were powered by Fukushima第一。

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

whiskeysour / patricia Eventually it will all go into the ocean , its just a matter of time , everyone knows it , its just that public is still not ready for it , (even after 3 years ) so needs some more brain washing :) LBW2010 If there was a solution , it would take an international effort and huge anounts of money ,, dont see it happening , its still TEPCO in charge , causing one blunder after another .
