Tokyo is cool, but if you're Chinese I guess Shanghai is your "thing".

Japanese kids are brainwashed with idea of Tokyo is great so first thing Japanese government should do is to remove that brainwashing and stop promoting Tokyo in TVs and news too much and instead should only focus on regional news and there greatness and opportunities. That will solve the problem. Stop promoting Tokyo = opportunities, there is nothing much there except placebo effect of media. Stay in your rural region, every Japanese kid.

Whenever I fly over Tokyo, I always think how ghastly and ugly it looks. Hardly any green spaces, unlike most northern European capitals. Why anyone would choose to live in such a place baffles me.

Amazing what you can see from 30000 feet, eye of an eagle I say!!!

You might want to compare the population size of whichever Northern European capital with Tokyo.

Why anyone would choose to live in such a place baffles me.

Safe, efficient, convenient, functional I can go on…….

Tokyo is expensive no doubt and Covid allows people to move to cheaper places.

But I wouldn’t live anywhere else, I love living here.

No natural beauty in Tokyo. It's a dump, and agree with what @david Brent, said.

You are mixing up your Shanghai with Tokyo!

Good. Far too many people in Tokyo. The government really should do more to promote far less populated cities and rural regions.

There is no lack of whiners who in their ignorance and frustration, only like to speak bad things of a great city in which they would not know how to live and surpasses them..

People, less feelings and more fact, no more tears.. Lol..

People are tired of ‘the grind’. Many G7 countries are experiencing similar city-to-country migrations and resignations from former jobs. Almost 25% of UK workers are actively planning to change employers in the next few months, as part of “The Great Resignation” prompted by a high vacancy numbers and pandemic burnout. A Rand UK survey of 6000 workers found 69% positive about moving to new roles in the next months, 24% planning changes is 3-6 months.  Normally, up to 11% were expected to move jobs every year.

Always wanted to live in Tokyo when I was in party mode. Now that I'm not, plus due to Covid I'm meeting less people, I see no point to going to central Tokyo anymore, let alone live there.

Fukui @Wobot 9:59pm Japan’s “Jurassic Park” or, “Land of the Lost” remnants from the Cretaceous period. Enjoy the holiday: great fish markets & inexpensive FRESH seafood. Eat some Echizen rab and drive around to see the Tojimbo cliffs. The Limited Express gets you to Kyoto/Osaka in about 2 hours. Remote part of Japan but if you find work and respite there from city life, it may be for you. - Best Wishes

@Wobot 9:59am: “I'm on holiday in Fukui, lived in Tokyo previously (now Osaka) and I don't understand why anyone would live in a big city anymore. Expensive, crowded, dirty... just for the flashing lights? Only good for young singles

@Wobot, not many one can do as you assumed. Life and where the work is. Home is where the heart is. The pandemic has created a whole new work style that potentially allows more to do what they want to do from almost anywhere without being physically close to something like Tokyo. But that depends on what jobs you are after and lifestyle you want. The new normal does in fact makes places like Tokyo less crowded and I hope that lasts.

Maybe more economic than COVID effect.

No mention of how this is probably due in a major way to the complete lack of new arrival foreign residents from abroad who were wholly blocked from entering in all of 2021, yet at the same time many probably left.

The Japanese government aims to balance the inflow and outflow of the population in the Tokyo area by fiscal 2024.

So for all those waiting in the wings abroad with your student or work visas who are looking to move to Japan, there's the schedule for when the government "aims" to maybe re-open.

If people want to leave and move to less populated regions, that's a win-win for society. Let them leave.

It's what I say about California every time someone complains about the governor or potential vax mandates: JUST MOVE.

That's crazy. Tokyo is the most crowded city I've ever experienced in the developed world. If people want to leave and move to less populated regions, that's a win-win for society. Let them leave.

People just do make sense things, just try to stay away from places that COVID spread most from time to time.
