Council to oversee 24-hour monitoring of volcanoes

The Central Disaster Prevention Council, which is chaired by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, will set up a body under the auspices of the Japan Meteorological Agency, whose responsibility would be to monitor Japan's 47 active volcanoes 24 hours a day.

The body will be comprised of local government officials and experts from the Meteorological Agency, and would put together hazard maps indicating dangerous areas, as well as design evacuation plans for areas surrounding the volcanoes.

The body will also oversee maintenance of evacuation shelters, as well as create educational pamphlets and other literature regarding volcanoes and the dangers they pose.

Do the world a favor and have Abe do the monitoring in person, 24/7, then I will admit that he knows how to lead by example.

Actually, it's a pretty good idea. After the last two Japanese eruptions that made the news, I checked the Quake sheet on the drudge report and the seismic activity was negligible. That means someone needs to be watching to keep the lava and ash cloud from being the first warning symptoms (maybe too late).

What expertise does Abe have in this area to qualify him?

Evidently you have no idea of what sarcasm is.

Because previously it was thought that volcanoes should really only erupt during office hours?

Isn't the military already on watch 24 hours a day? Why not give their watch centers a few extra consoles dedicated to volcano watch and tsunami watch?

@ Sofa_king. Does that include, Bank holidays, weekends and other national holidays? (I know its sarcasm)
