Couple found dead in Tokyo apartment

Police are investigating the deaths of a couple in their apartment in Tokyo's Arakawa Ward.

According to police, the man, in his 40s, was found dead in front of the toilet door, while his wife, who is in her 50s, was found dead and locked inside the toilet. The couple were found at around 3:30 p.m. Thursday by a bento home delivery man, Fuji TV reported Saturday.

Police said it appears the man had come home severely intoxicated and fell into a deep sleep in front of the toilet. His wife called her relatives complaining that her husband had fallen asleep in front of the toilet door, and then she went into the toilet. But her husband awoke and then fell down again, this time blocking the toilet door from opening. His nearly 100-kilogram body blocked the door, making it impossible for the woman to leave.

Police believe she likely died of heatstroke and or dehydration. The couple rarely used the air conditioner.

Sources say that the man was taking medication to treat an illness.

I agree. I was simply referring to this comment from earlier in the thread:

Another reason not to be obese.

100kg as a weight without reference doesn't tell us whether he was obese, tall, or muscular. I've been 100kg, at 18% body fat - not obese at all. Other people are really tall, and 100kg is their natural weight, though in Japan this isn't so likely. But not impossible either.

Weird. Death by mishap.

Japanese media say the guy was about 100 kilos.

Considering both husband and wife were dead at the toilet, who ordered a bento and how did he get in to find them?

Another reason not to be obese.

How do you know he was obese?

This is very hard to believe. Has an autopsy been performed? It sound like a variation on those murder cases where the police decide it's a suicide because they don't have no clue who the suspect is.

Sorry but I do not believe that sorry.... way too much conjecture.

Lord have mercy! How bizarre!

This was reported on the TV a few days ago. The guy fell down drunk near the toilet, wife phoned relatives to complaine about him. She went into the toilet, husband rolled over - blocking the toilet, and after some time they died.

As ill luck would have it, a number of chance events seem to have invited the tragedy this time. RIP.

This is beyond bizarre! She has her phone with her in the bathroom, calls a relative but not 119? Has to be more to this story.

There's something very odd here, even in a drunken stupor he would wake after a few hours surly? Dehydration is unlikely as there is water available in most Japanese toilets.

blocked...not locked

Sounds like an aneurism.

And the relatives did nothing? Why didn't she call the police?

Oh dear....

This is truly sad.

RIP but sounds like Final Destination

Why didn't the relatives get over there or send someone to check? She called for help. A call that was not answered.
