A couple in their 80s have been missing since going into a mountain forest area in southern Nagano Prefecture on Sept 28 to pick mushrooms.

The couple, an 85-year-old man and his 82-year-old wife, live in Achi village, and were reported missing by members of their family at around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sankei Shimbun reported.

The relatives told police they had not heard from the couple since they went into the mountain forest last Thursday, so they went looking for them at their favorite spot for picking mushrooms on Saturday. That is when they found the missing couple’s car by the side of a mountain road and notified police.

On Sunday morning, police mobilized about 100 personnel to search for the couple but without luck. Police said neither of the couple has a cell phone.

Odd. Yesterday evening it was reported that although the woman was still missing, the man was found in the vicinity of the car “with a heart that was not beating”, which I suppose is another way of saying he was deceased.
