Couldn't he have just said that he was drunk and doesn't remember saying it?
smithinjapan
"Tokyo Gov Yuriko Koike said the comments were "impermissible" and told reporters that she was at a loss for words when she learned about the remarks."
So, if Koike's stance is that his remarks are impermissible, why does she allow him to stay on? Seems pretty permissible to me. In fact, it is a statement that she, too, allows and encourages such remarks.
Vinke
Perhaps for them, but not for the rest of the world. Mori should go, or the IOC and the IPC are basically sending a message, that they agree with what he said.
tamanegi
It's also very disingenuous of the media to refer to his comments as a "gaffe". Mori knows exactly what he said and it was his stated opinion.
Aly Rustom
As long as that slime ball Bach has Mori's back he's not going to resign.
I hope that female Olympians around the world boycott these games as a sign of protest. That would really get the message across.
smithinjapan
Ah, so Mori's 'apology', which is far from genuine but instead the "moushiwakenai" get out of jail card, "closes the matter", does it? Maybe it closed things with the oyaji that agree with Mori, and women like Koike that wish they were an oyaji, but unfortunately for Japan this is the lead story with regard to the Olympics in the international media, and for the entire world, even though Japan often thinks it's not a part of it, it is far from closed. But, I hope it scuttles the Olympics once and for all -- they should have been cancelled LONG ago. Won't bother me if it's this that's the nail in the coffin, since Japan won't cut the old misogynist loose.
SandyBeachHeaven
Does she mean the Corona Virus or this old man's stupid comments?
Yotomaya
Interesting, coming from a member of the explicitly sexist Nippon Kaigi.
TheReds
All he does is sit there and order people to do the job. And then open his mouth and fart from it. We don't need this kind of ojichan.
rainyday
I've come to believe that Japan as we know it does not actually exist but rather is a simulated reality created by a hyper advanced alien species solely for the purpose of empirically testing the full extent to which it is possible, within the laws of physics that operate in the known universe, to screw up an Olympics.
Japanoob
The IOC, JOC or LDP etc. don't get to decide what the outcome for this muppet will be. The public decide that. So yeah keep tweeting, retweeting, and clicking on links like this (cuz that's what the media likes and what keeps them covering certain stories). Keep up that pressure till he resigns which will send a message to the LDP and society in general that certain things will no longer be tolerated. btw - Love what @wick_22 tweeted :-)

Tokyo Gov Yuriko Koike has to call for Mori dismissal.
This needs to be brought to a satisfactory conclusion.
noriahojanen
Hopefully he will resign voluntarily
To attack Mori on the ground of his age may constitute another stereotype or agism, I should warn. He's not typical nor representing his age cohort. I call for a smart #MeToo campaign.
3RENSHO
It was a set-up. Mr. Mori makes for an easy target, due to his age and appearance. Someone behind the scenes wants him off the stage and out of the picture, as the backroom struggle over holding the Tokyo Olympics continues unabated...
GdTokyo
I mean they appointed PM moron, er...”Mori”, what did they expect from the guy who asked Clinton “Who are you?” Instead of “How are you?” And replied “Me too.” When Clinton replies “I’m Hillary’s husband.” ?
The potential for gaffe-based embarrassment has yet to be even scratched.
kurisupisu
Mori can’t even remember what he had for breakfast yesterday and Hashimoto wants an apology?
Garthgoyle
The solution is simple. From now on, every time he needs to talk in a meeting, he's got five minutes coz he talks to much.
Jax
Mori was involved in the Olympics since early 2000s, while perhaps a bit of a gaffer, he is the right person to be posting this post. A lot of people said that on the telly today.
Instead, it's a good chance to use this opportunity to change a few things in Japan when it comes to treatment of women, and by demanding him to resign constantly is not a good way of doing it.
saiaku
Dumb, corrupt, old-fashioned thinking oyaji is what is slowing Japan down in all fields.
Jandworld
A fossil alive at the 1940 olympic attempt still holding office as if there were no changes.
Yubaru
He could of at least given a half of a bow, and not read from some paper. No one thinks it was sincere.
He should have gotten lessons from his buddies at Japan Inc on how to "properly" apologize! Yet he could do that either, he isnt sorry! He just can not understand WHY people dont accept it!
OssanAmerica
Mori was a really really bad choice from the start. He can't bring himself to make an actual apology now because he has no idea what was wrong with what he said. He needs to resign period.
Alfie Noakes
Mori is the true symbol of the Tokyo Olympics: all the fraud, greed, ultra-nationalism, arrogance, sexism, contempt for the public, lies, cynical deception and ignorance in one human form. Bravo!
Jim
Speaks volume of IOC and how corrupt these officials are...pathetic IOC responses which goes against its own rules and regulations!
Pukey2
A 10 degree bow??!!!
Either 90 degrees or get on your knees!
Songenshi
Ha Ha...I am surprised that anyone is surprised. He is living proof (well for a little longer) that Japan is incapable of running a school raffle. If anything, the level of female representation on boards and in government has declined over the past decade...and the women have let it happen. Most Japanese politicians, especially the retired type are straight up morons and belong back in the Tokugawa period (with apologies to Ieyasu). There is no way forward until gender quotas are introduced to rid the upper echelons of inbred misogynist dross.
Michael Machida
He was on TV all morning. Now I know why Japan has problems.
rcch
Even if he apologizes 239 times, the man is not gonna change. It’s who he is. He and all the other “dinosaurs”. We just need to wait for them to “go away”, if you know what I mean.
Cognac
all comments complaining what he said and accusing him to be old
so now being old is a crime? it's not harassment about the age ?
ok ask for dimission but call him dinosaur, fossil alive.. it's shameful
itsonlyrocknroll
Zoroto, indeed!
What government executive authority gave the nod for Yoshiro Mori appointment?
Prime Minster Yoshihide Suga popularity rating could well become a further casualty, if damage limitation is not forthcoming, pronto.
Plus, the fact that Tokyo Gov Yuriko Koike is hedging her political bets.
Yuriko Koike instinctively views the longer Mori remains in post, the more the political fallout heads in the direction of PM Suga Government.
Politicians and their scheming, it in there nature.
Sambou
Yoshiro Mori, who this week said women talk too much during meetings and later apologized for the comments.
period!
iluvyokohama
The fact that Mori who was one of the worst Prime Ministers in the history of Japan still wields tremendous political power just shows how messed up Japan's political system is.

@Garthgoyle
You meant seconds ?
@Jax
By letting it slide when someone do sexist comments ? Moreover when it ""violate the [...] spirit" (Yamashita) of the organization&co your are supposed to work for ?
https://www.olympic.org/gender-equality
With an emphasis on taking action, the aim of the [IOC Gender Equality Review] Project is to provide a solutions-based approach to achieving gender equality on and off the field of play, sooner, rather than later. by making "sure their [women's] speaking time is restricted somewhat." according to Mori.
What do you propose ?
Firing him ? Salary cut ? Suspension without pay ? Demoting ? Public (as the issue is public) letter of reprimand ? ...
GdTokyo
To be fair, he’s an idiot as well. And he was an idiot long before he was old.
WelshExile
He's and out-of-touch old dinosaur. He should be made to resign after his outrageous and unacceptable statements. The IOC didn't have the guts to make a stand, which they should have done. Saying the matter was closed is weak and sends absolutely the wrong message. Perhaps they have forgotten their mission, which states, "The goal of the Olympic Movement is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practiced without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play." Or they could drop the "... without discrimination... " part.
Jbigs
Just tick the boxes and say the correct things that make people smile or nod. Freedom of speech does not exist.
Khuniri
Unlike, I would surmise, most commentators here, I remember when Mori-san was the prime minister. The sharpest knife in the drawer he was not even then, but he was and is (it seems) good at playing dumb...
Sexism bad. Ageism good...I was all for women until I started getting badgered. I was all for getting rid of dinosaurs, until I became one myself.
I have no dog in this fight, as I regard the entire Olympics endeavour as a scam. e)
HJSLLS
He might get away with this behavior in Japan, where maintaining harmony is high priority, but Japan is on an international stage, representing an event designed to bring nations together. He has tarnished the image of the Olympics and must resign. Otherwise, the Olympics will face the consequences of protest and abandonment. I am particularly disappointed in the IOC’s response to gloss over Mori’s string of insults. Another insult in a different form.
factchecker
Yes, and the international media is on the story. Grab yourself some popcorn. The implosion should be fun to watch.
Mark
This is what happens when you put an Antique in charge of high pressure event. Mr. Mori is an Antique, and should be treated that way, may be displayed in a hall somewhere in Tokyo.
TARA TAN KITAOKA
Japan men with this kind of mind is why the Japanese world never changed.
Oxycodin
LDP gets away from going to GCUP hostess bar while this man is getting a hit
Doest make sense here.
LDP is more foul than this man is. Period.
Oxycodin
Koike concerned? LOL she is fraud herself winning governance of Tokyo acting as if she handle covid correctly... Getting tired of BS
ZENJI
Mori will not go away, Why?
CASH. The loss of Mega Yen.
Personel profit. That is Mori's base line.
Join the dots.
Happy Day
Japanese women will be just fine, so save the faux outrage. They know that there is still some chauvinism in Japan and they know how to deal with it. But Mori certainly opened the door for CCP cancel cultists, who would like to see Japan fail.
Kumagaijin
Well, what do you expect an oyajisaur to say?
Danny Nguyen
This is ridiculous. When you want things to change, accountability should be a primary rule. Being guilty of making those comments, Mori must pay the price.
For the few people who have written stuff defending Mori's mindset, I will ask you this: what has the Japanese government achieved in the last few decades with almost no women in commanding positions? They complain that women talk too much and yet it's funny how the old boys country club has not been particularly active at bringing anything to the table except talking for the sake of talking.
As some people already mentioned, this is the international stage and there is no room for that kind of stuff. If you keep such people in high positions, Japan will keep a very bad image. If Mori does not want to resign, then he should be ruthlessly sacked with little to no severance pay.
That's the most ridiculous thing I have read today. The CCP is also ruled by their share of old patriarchal farts hanging so hard to power against freedom and change. Overall, patriarchy is a disease that hinders progress no matter what country you're from.
Danny Nguyen
Nothing. He should have been fired on the spot from the moment he openly refused to resign.
gokai_wo_maneku
The good side of this is that it may bring about the cancellation of what is likely to be a health disaster.
Nadège
This is normal to be angry. When this is women the victime, they never feel the need to resign and nobody feel the need to ask them to. This is shameful for Japan.
After corean women confort, we know the level and value of a Japanese male apology to women : Nothing ! They just start again the next day. The Olympic can't be tarnished by those yakusa type attitude toward women. Only animal insult women this way, and Japan already been proven to have given underground money to have the Olympic games before France.
