There needs to be accountability and justice for Wishma and all other victims of Japanese immigration. How about begin with an apology?

If the country's courts can't give justice to her, then who can? I doubt that any international body will step in, nor will Japan allow it to happen. In the very least, I just pray that if her case doesn't get any legal reprieve, then let it be known to Japan and the rest of the world that there is injustice in Japan's detention centers.

A detention center is not a holiday resort. It is, in fact, punishment for breaking the law by over-staying.

The unpublished findings are due to the method she used to obtain the cleaning products, to protect the shame of that method for herself and the other party (I'm sure you have figured it out by now). Her family have agreed to keep this fact silent.

The family reserve the right to complain about what they deem to be inappropriate care after the self poisoning, but the prosecutors concluded that the speed and impact of the poisoning were symptoms detention centre workers would not be able to recognise, and what she consumed would have been fatal with or without medial care.

This girl is not a criminal. This girl overstayed however this in itself is not a criminal act that deserves death. This was a girl that was not Japanese. This girl was not treated as a human in Japan. This girl is not with us anymore and for what? What big crime did this girl commit? Japan would rather put a girl to death than to have compassion and understanding. Its regrettable that Japan has blood on its hands, again.

The cause of death was the cold hearted indifference of an inhumane system and those that facilitate it. The DOUBLE crime is your denial and reaction to it. Sometimes evil is not an action, it’s the lack of action, and the pulling away from people in their hour of need, something that unfortunately comes way too naturally to people here sometimes. The sad dark underbelly of this ‘kind’ culture.

Anyone think the Sri Lankan justice system would be any kinder? The girl overstayed her visa. Japanese immigration detention centers are a little better than prison. But if she did die from inadequate medical attention then the Japanese should be held accountable.

It's unfortunate, I really feel sorry for her, from my experience with the japanese immigration detention system, she was the 1% detained for actually overstaying her visa and wanting to stay in Japan to work and be a member of society.

This is no joke, 99% of the people detained for more than 3 months in Tokyo or Osaka (not sure about the other centers) are ex-convicts, coming after spending years in the harsh japanese prison (reason they are totally fine being locked up in the immigration center for months, a heaven if compared with keimusho), some petty criminals coming from the detention house on their trial day when they receive their suspended sentence, some cleared from police stations (but not undetected by immigration).

Ex-convicts demand daily cleaning to be done by everyone in their shared room as soon as everyone wakes up, doors to the communal hall only open by 9:30am but these people demand everything to be spotless by 7:30am as soon as lights are up as this is how they spent years in the real jail.

Again, we have to learn to sift the 1% wheat from the chaff.

that scares me. It's like a country in the third world that doesn't pick up on its mistakes and shifts the blame to others. This is by no means a reaction from a modern democratic country.

Try showing up for treatment with out a health insurance card and see what happens. Nobody is immune to this kind of treatment and indifference so good luck.

Students usually are very intelligent and can remember the only three rules here, no big violence crimes, no illegal drugs and no overstaying the granted visa without a very well written explanation and excuse from the bottom of heart. It’s in the very most cases not true, that you immediately and harshly treated land in detention centers when overstaying, only if you don’t have any explanation, very important reason or try do hide anywhere in anonymity , work illegally etc. and for example again overstay an additionally granted timespan.

how about this part?lets imagine who could help her there?no one except doctor assigned to that detention centre?who could understand that something is wrong?possibly that detentio centre staff?who suppose to be held responsible for her death?possibly top manager of that detention center and people in charge?

all story is not about overstaying of visa etc.she was foreigner here and if she have trespassed rules-yes may be arrested and kept in detention centre and than send home asap-no saying anything about it at all.story is about complete failure of system in that detention centre where people in detention can die and no one is held responsible!

this may happen to any foreigner in Japan who have overstayed visa,was arrested and sent to detention centre!

They also said the officials did not care if Wishma died.

Doubly shameful, first that this could happen, then that the courts of the land refuse to acknowledge the problem. Refusing medical care to this woman in spite of her multiple entreaties is a crime, pure and simple. I am Japanese, and I am ashamed.

Japanese companies and government (that includes its people) love self padding on their shoulders. But when it comes to accepting responsibility for something they did wrong, shhhh. Say nothing.
