I saw it Sunday driving on the Hanshin Highway driving over the Yodo River. RIP

Really, a whale not used for scientific research only.

Drop it off in the deep ocean is the best solution. A whale carcass will provide nutrition and energy for a vast array of creatures feeding off of it across a considerable period of time. It is a major element of the deep ocean ecology.

Sharks will love it.

Bring on the sharks. Make a huge cut just before sinking.

ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

Shouldn't they be doing "research" on it??

Surely there will be some biological samples etc taken before the disposal?

Seriously. I would be surprised if there are no samples collected.

I confirmed in some Japanese articles that indeed biological samples etc will be taken:

破裂や爆発を防ぐため内部のガスを抜いた上で専門家による学術調査も実施する。

調査の後、和歌山、徳島両県の間の海域を船で南下して紀伊半島沖まで運び、重りを付けて19日に沈める予定。

Of course “save the whales” people think that whales are different from frogs and other animals and nothing can be gleaned from such examinations. :) Bless them.

As a matter of economics, returning it to the ocean is the most practical solution. Letting it decay on the beach would be annoying for those nearby.
