A MONTH ago is the beginning of August . .trust me Dengue fever and Yoyogi Park were in the news already

I'm not going to trust you. How about a source for your "fact"? While there had been over 90 cases of Dengue Fever reported in Japan up through late August, they were all in people who had recently been in countries where Dengue Fever is a concern. The first case where the person had not recently traveled was confirmed only on August 27 and nothing in THAT person's report mentions Yoyogi Park. Here's my source:

Everyone should just chill out a bit! Dengue isn't usually life threatening anyway! No, we should not "eradicate" an entire species! Yes, mosquitoes are annoying, but they do serve a purpose, and even if we didn't know its' purpose, we can't just remove them! And no, japan shouldn't look to florida's system of killing everything weekly. Maybe you all should do some research on the effects of spraying chemicals all over the place... and accept the fact that, yes, PEOPLE DO GET SICK!

As an odd side note: Perhaps because the mosquitoes tend to be active during daylight hours, none of the many homeless who sleep rough in the park at night have been affected.

And from the same article: Health and Welfare Minister Norihisa Tamura has said more cases could surface, but he downplayed the possibility of an epidemic, urging calm.

After Fukushima, I will never believe any govt official telling me, remain calm, the park is fine, just cover up and you're safe. People could be getting infected at an alarming rate everyday and I think they'd urge me to remain calm and I'd never know the true total number of victims.

It was only an approximate number of liters of pesticide used at the time of writing, it does not infer there would not be more used thereafter.

Yes, depends on the virus strain and the type of mosquito but it is relatively easy to find, its called transovarian transmission. Nobody knows for sure how important this is to an epidemic but seems to be a factor in keeping a zone endemic.

Do mosquitoes fulfill a necessary role in the environment? If not, why not eradicate them?

Mosquitoes in general are important ecologically, but fortunately there are a lot of different species that don't bite humans. Eradication of selected species have been done before without noticeable consequences but the problem is keeping the mosquitoes out, it has been demonstrated that a lot of mosquitoes are brought to Kyushu from China every year by winds. Eradication would have to be then a permanent effort, not very cost effective.

OOps this is a problem for country like Japan with lots of Parks and ponds, a perfect breeding ground for Mosquito. Looks like Tiger Masquito redeveloped their Killer instinct.

LOL i saw in the news they interviewed some foreigners drinking in the park about whether they had seen the news. One spoke Japanese and said "oh yeah bugs, i heard. But you are spraying, so it should be ok" followed by "Shouganai"

And then they interrupted two guys lying on a blue sheet in a pitch black area, obviously trying to have some discreet fun, but they were even more oblivious "oh i think i saw something on the news... What, its dangerous? really? oh"

They are spraying, draining ponds, but the mozzies are still there. Just stay away until it is sorted!

Wow!!! Even the beautiful people are affected........ They should carpet bomb Yoyogi Park with the relevant insecticide. They do in Singapore and manage to keep dengue largely under control.

Sounds unlikely that one single person infected one mosquito and this mosquito continued on to infect 40 people. Does anybody know if infected mosquitoes pass on the virus to their eggs? A tiger mosquito will feed on up to 5-6 people per egg batch, lay dozens of eggs weekly and live for about a month.

Was it brought to Japan somehow has it always been in Tokyo? I see that it was 'stamped out' a few decades ago but what a strange disease to suddenly spread in such an urban area. So strange...
