Best thing from the Olympics: “Nothing in particular,” 39.6% of reconstruction zone respondents
Mission apparently not accomplished.

No surprise. It was always just propaganda.
Some construction companies in Tokyo are happy, I’m sure. And the IOC. And the other fat cat “stakeholders”.

20 billion dollars spent for all that?
kurisupisu
…..
Surely, not the highlights?
What a monumental waste….

Why they should impress? Really need to do survey and report to understand that?
Nosui
I’m not sure why these articles often mention the Zaha Hadid design for the stadium. Her company was dropped relatively early on and Kengo Kuma the architect.

The Tokyo Olympics, promoted as a way to improve the plight of areas devastated by March 2011's massive earthquake and tsunami, left residents of northeastern Japan largely unimpressed,
With good reason.
The people of Tokyo are brave and resourceful.
Only someone with severely defecient mental faculties would have fallen for the government propaganda that this Pandemic Olympics was anything but a wealth grab by the IOC and LDP.

The above should have read "The people of Tohoku are brave and resourceful".
Auto-correct...
Sh1mon M4sada
They've had so many slogans for the Tokyo Olympics but the only that stuck in most people's mind is the 'Empty Olympic', empty stadium, empty coffers, empty bladder....
Sam Watters
I would be ashamed to have to ask the residents of Tohoku that question. And now the same swine wants Sapporo to host another cash grab…

I think I’m turning Japanese I think I’m turning Japanese I really think so……
what kind of a survey is this? It’s yes or no.
im surprised there’s no “I guess so” or “maybe so” or “maybe, I guess so, I think?”
uhh, no kidding? Considering all the money that WASN’T made from the Olympics ended up in corrupt government officials pockets.
even if the Olympics made dollar number one in profits, it wouldn’t have gone to Fukushima anyway. Who are they trying to fool?
it’s like that one Chris Rock bit, where the neighbors who rob your house at night, come over the next morning and say “I heard you got robbed”
vendingmachinemusic
yeah, with all of that money, they just should have made a bunch of parks all over Japan.

"Recovery Olympics" is a contradiction in terms.
Seigi
No one was impressed... period! Only self-serving, self-indulging oyajis and stage directors were happy.

I think they are branding Sapporo's current bid as the "Recovery Olympics to recover from the previous Olympics".
YeahRight
As a long-term resident of Iwate, I was absolutely devastated when I heard Tokyo was going to host the Olympics. I knew from the beginning that absolutely nothing would happen to help the Tohoku region, and I was right. The pandemic certainly didn't help things, either.
Japantime
Unfortunately, the Tokyo Olympics will go down as the worst Olympics in history. No supporters were able to attend. I don’t think people even watched it on TV as there was no interest from ordinary citizens.
Jim
It was never about being a ‘ recovery Olympics’… more like a pocket filling Olympics for the corrupt IOC and throwing money Olympics for the Japanese organizers! In the end the common citizens ( taxpayers ) will suffer!
factchecker
What a croc. Why didn't they submit Sendai as the host city then. Never let the 5 ring circus anywhere near your city.
Rodney
No Japanese really care about the affected people in Tohoku just the fact we were blindly ripped off by the IOC. A pride thing.
you forgot to mention the connected that got the multimillion dollar apartments in the Olympic village. 40% apparently.
GillislowTier
The fact they tried to spin spending billions on an event to say how much the region recovered, without going to that region or using the proceeds to further redevelopment of the region and people… says so much about the standard the government is working at.
Japanese people ain’t dumb enough to not notice, just too complacent to say it
Joe Blow
I think they should be held in the country of origin, Greece, every year and participants from around the world can go there to compete.
Cricky
If the the LDP promote something, anything you know the citizens suffer and they politicians get richer. It’s just the Japanese way for 100s of years. What are you going to do?
Paul
The Olympics was a way to spread money to the political friends! There was nothing done about reconstruction, it was just an excuse same as the legacy slogan!!!
Gaijinjland
The Olympics absolutely make no sense and have always left the host city in debt. I mean, what do Olympic athletes get out of it other than product endorsement and the chance to compete in 2 or maybe 3 Olympics in their lifetime? I don’t get it. It makes much more sense for a pro sportsman to sign a $100 million contract with a team over 6 years. The Olympics are just strange.
