Who said dolphins are intelligent and friendly animals?

Not the professor quoted in this article. They reckon that "(w)hile dolphins in aquariums are often seen forming bonds with humans, frequent interaction with people can cause them to try to assert their dominance through behaviors like biting and ramming."

And intelligent or not - friendly is anthropomorphic - they are still wild animals and should be treated with caution.

Orcas ramming yachts and now dolphins going after humans. The creatures of the sea have had enough of our nonsense.

""Wild dolphin attacks at beaches in a central Japan prefecture""

Never heard of Dolphin attacking anyone before !?

There has to be a reason why these gentle Mammals are behaving in this manner and I hope those who are investigating this keep in mind that Dolphins rarely and hardly ever attack humans.

Dolphins can be extremely dangerous when if they are moody, mating, or if you just piss them off, not only can they give you a very nasty bite, but they can ram you, and they prefer to ram humans right in the chest. People tend to think because the dolphin is smiling, then it must be alright to play with them. I have played with them before in one of those touch tanks, and you can really feel the power of these animals have, I have a much deeper respect for them these days.

I’ve been up close with dolphins and have sensed their presence strongly.

Humans should stay out of their habitat for several seasons and evaluate reentering the ocean gradually.

After Obon Japanese do not enter the seas around Japan anyway…

Time to bring in the tech bros and with AI skills and put them to work translating the dolphin language. Let's Doctor Doolittle this problem away!

If it is the same animal, it has developed a taste for digits.

This article in the NYT states twice the number of attacks and attributes them to mating behavior.

Tha animal kingdom is fighting back at the single most destructive animal this planet has ever seen.

Wild animals act wild.

Or should we wait until a child dies?

Or do what the sign above says, and be vigilant when taking a dip in the sea. Maybe take your child swimming somewhere that is not the territory of potentially dangerous wild animals.

Sounds like a rogue dolphin/porpoise.

You get rogue elephants, rogue lions, tigers, hippos etc., often set off by a bad tooth or a thorn, or rejection by the herd/group, making hunting less easy.

I feel like a movie plot is developing here. Hmmm... Bottlenose Battleaxe ? Flipper the Ripper? The Dorsal of Destruction? I don't know... have to consider this. Meanwhile: https://youtu.be/azEOeTX1LqM

In the conflicts between man and animal, I generally root for the animal.

My agreement with wild animals is simple - You don't enter my home and I don't enter yours.

Time for the hunts to begin!!!

Intelligence is incompatible with "gentle"

Never forget that wild animals are wild animals. They are neither tamed nor pets. Always be cautious near wild animals.

Having to stay in your home 24/7 must get boring.

I like swimming at the beach - but am observant of what sea life lives in there.

Capturing dolphins is generally prohibited under government regulations and Fukui prefectural officials have said they currently have no plans to do so in this instance.

This is BS. Anyone ever hear of Taiji?

When bears or wild boar attack humans they are hunted and killed. Seems like the cute dolphins are getting special treatment. I hope we don't end up with a child severely injured or worse.

If you dont think 20 to 30 stitches isnt "severe" I wonder what your definition is?

including an elementary school student whose finger required 20 to 30 stitches and took a month to heal,

Don’t let the permanently fixed smile fool you. Dolphins commit some of the most heinous crimes in marine wildlife.

Can you imagine being at a party and one of your friends sees your arm half chewed off and asks "Mike, what happened to your arm, man?", and you have to explain you got into a fight with a dolphin...

It's simply revenge for Taiji cruelty.

They're still animals, and animals aren't always tame no matter what you do with them.

This ocean pollution is getting out of hand. Maybe it's making dolphins more aggressive now.

Sounds like a plot for some cheapo Z-grade campy horror movie, doesn't it? I can see it now, 'Demon Possessed Dolphins from the Depths of the Deep!'. Yaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"The dolphin may be coming to the beach in search of human interaction," Morisaka said.

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/a-dolphin-that-has-been-biting-people-may-just-be-friendly/

says that the same young male is likely doing all the biting and it is normal "friendly" behavior between dolphins as a way to maintain a friendship. He thinks he has a friendship with humans already.

If it was an attack, he'd come in fast, hard, and chomp down, not with a little nip. of course, human skin, especially when soaked by water is very frail. Eventually, he will learn that nipping at humans does harm and will stop. At least that's the hope. But I wouldn't want to be the human that is part of that training.
