I put the news on as soon as the alert came through on my phone.
I was relieved when there was no reports of serious injuries or damage to property. And that there's also no reports of tsunami warnings or irregularities at the nearby Sendai Nuclear plant.

Just a warning that the Nankai trough is out there and rumbling.
As to no reports at either Genkai or south Kyushu’s Sendai nuclear plants, ‘no reports’ of damage is the standard automatic government announcement before detailed checks are carried out.

Just been reading that if one of these hits a minimum of M6.8 an investigative team gets set up to figure out whether it presages the expected big one. In the meantime residents are being warned to have escape plans in place, just in case.

@nanda, always have a grab bag, an escape route and a safe place in mind in Japan not “just in case” but for when.

zichi, I read several news articles in Japanese today saying this Hyuga Nada is just west of where the Eurasian and Philippine plates meet but it is apparently connected to the whole Nankai quake area. (Links provided if wanted.)
Speed
Yeah, there was one issued the first few minutes after the quake but it was rescinded. I'm right near the coast so that's one of the first bits of information I look for.

Speed, they later said that there might be some instability in the sea level, but no tsunami per se.

Many thanks, zichi!

Thanks, zichi. In recent earthquake reports on JT, they haven't reported intensity data. I wish they would. You can see intensity data here:
