An elderly couple died after their car went off the road and fell into the sea in Bizen, Okayama Prefecture, police said Tuesday.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 2 p.m. Monday. Witnesses at the harbor area reported a car plunging into the sea and called 119, TV Asahi reported.

Police and rescue workers pulled the elderly couple from the car, but they were pronounced dead soon after. The couple were an 80-year-old man and his 77-year-old wife from Hyogo Prefecture.

Police said they haven't determined yet whether the car went into the sea by accident of whether it was a suicide.

I said it once, I say it again... the moment you turn 65 (you retire), you turn back your driver's license. 'Tis the wise way

Check with their family doctor to see if one was caring for the other. That may support or disprove the suicide possibility.

Mistook the accelerator for the brake, no doubt.

Very sad, and more likely than not an accident.

Heart attack/stroke while driving is also a possibility...
