I hope his son will keep pressing on peace and keep fighting the Nippon Kaigi mentality

His whole life was a symbol of the anti-democratic, , misogynist, patriarchal nature of the Japanese Imperial state

Actually, it was complete opposite: he proactively tried to find what constitutional monarchy should be under democracy; he showed steadfast royalty to his wife; and he showed a separation of power (権力) and authority (権威) of Japanese political system.

He was strong. He knew right from wrong. And in spite of any threats he refused to visit Yasukuni as long as certain controversial names were forcibly introduced and included there.

I am sure the nation of Japan will give thanks for a dedicated life of service by this principled man.

You can tell from this article alone that Akihito really wanted to do a LOT more with respect to what Japan did in the 1930-40's BUT you can also CLEARLY see just how much the ldp made sure he did NOT do more where it seems the Emperor would have gladly tread!

@Speed

First World War?

Not big news in Japan at the time, but still a war involving the nation.

Good for him.

He was under no obligation to do what he did, and had no political power to do anything.

When he abdicates April 30, Akihito will become the first emperor in Japan's modern history to see his era end without ever having a war.

I don't think the Taisho Era had any wars either. Unless someone can chime in.
