Emperor calls on nation to unite in fighting recession

Emperor Akihito made a rare comment on economic matters to call on the nation to unite in fighting its recession, in a New Year message released Thursday. "It grieves my heart that many people have been left in difficult conditions as the economic situation has worsened in our country since autumn due to the effects of the global financial crisis," he said.

"I hope people overcome these difficulties by mustering their wisdom, caring for ties with other people and helping one another," the 75-year-old monarch added.

Japanese companies have cut tens of thousands of jobs, mostly of vulnerable temporary-contract workers, as the demand for cars, cameras and other products dies amid the crisis.

Akihito, who marks the 20th anniversary of his reign in 2009 after taking over from his father Emperor Hirohito, who died on Jan 7, 1989, has been recovering from illness.

He has been restricting his official duties in recent weeks since suffering an irregular pulse.

I think it is for Aso to issue such statement not Emperor. It is said : "The distance between theory and practice is much greater in practice than in theory." And practically Aso is the Prime Minister of Japan who is selected (elected?) to run the State Affairs !

Maybe tenno chan can open up the grounds of the imperial palace for the homeless to have a permanent place of abode, essential in the job hunt.

Thought not!

I have very little sympathy for those too lazy to help themselves, but I agree with the post above: If the Emperor is going to call on others to do something, perhaps he and his family could live on a little bit less himself.

... on a little bit less themselves.

shiuu,

I wouldn`t consider people too lazy to help themselves because they are homeless or out of work. These situations are all too common in a world that has so much money and corruption. Perfect example of failed politics and Democratic societies not working.

This from someone who lives in a "palace"

Hey, if you feel that way, feel free to put your money where your mouth is and give your next paycheck to the next homeless guy you meet. After all, if you're still getting a paycheck, it's certainly thanks to the money, corruption and politics of the free Democratic society which allows you to post such silly opinions on the internet.

shiuu,

Why do I have to give my next paycheck to someone? That didnt really make any sense. I contribute in many ways. You sound like George Bush by calling homeless/jobless people "lazy." And let me guess, you cant stand him. Elected officials are responsible for sorting out situations like the one in the article above, not me. A Democratic society extends beyond receiving a paycheck/wandering malls/movies/driving cars etc. I wouldn`t consider my opinion(s)silly they are just logical and caring.

Are you calling the unemployed lazy or the emperor?

“I hope people overcome these difficulties by mustering their wisdom, caring for ties with other people and helping one another,” the 75-year-old monarch added."

Heyyy! That's not bad! Not bad at all. :)

I think he even thought of that himself! Unlike certain other leaders in other nations the (notional) monarch in these parts isn't urging the peons to spend money they haven't got on crepe they don't need from people working as slaves in foreign tyrannical regimes on behalf of the International people and their banks.

The message here is that those who are wise and resourceful will make it. Though there is also an underlying message which is that loads of people aren't going to make it because wisdom is a relative term.

The more I ponder the issue, the 'economy' is not 'our' economy, rather it is the surplus profits from our collective slaving which the elite use to tax so as to provide them with yet more money to finance their parasitical existence.

Using wisdom means living within your means, however meagre they may be. Scrimping here and there like never before. A penny saved is a penny earned 'n all that.

Sarcrew the economy! Let's worry about 'our' economies for a change. Good luck!

Although much of the rest of the post is silliness, this part is exactly right.
