Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on Thursday.
The Imperial Household Agency has cut back on official duties for the emperor, 80, since he had heart bypass surgery in 2012. The agency said the emperor and the empress, 79, still play tennis occasionally and go for walks.
On Thursday morning, the imperial couple attended a ceremony at Juntendo University to mark the 175th anniversary of its founding.
On Thursday night, the couple will dine with their children. No official events are planned for the evening.
