Emperor, empress visit Fukushima

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko on Monday began a two-day visit to areas of Fukushima Prefecture hard hit by the nuclear crisis following the March 11, 2011 disaster.

The emperor, 79, and empress, 78, visited a factory in Iitate which is still partly a no-go zone, Fuji TV reported. The couple later met with people relocated due to the nuclear disaster to offer them encouragement. On Tuesday, they will go to the town of Kawamata to meet students who had to leave their homes near the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

The imperial couple visited Iwate Prefecture earlier this month to meet displaced residents who have been living in temporary housing since the disaster.

The Emperor and the empress are very caring people. I hope their heirs and successors continue to be a good example to the public.
