Emperor plays tennis for 1st time since operation

Emperor Akihito played tennis on Tuesday morning, his first active exercise since he underwent heart bypass surgery in February.

The Imperial Household Agency said that the emperor, 78, and Empress Michiko, 77, teamed up to play doubles against agency staff members for about half an hour. The agency said that the emperor has also been playing table tennis as part of his rehab exercises.

Since his surgery, the emperor has mainly been walking to regain his strength, the agency said.

ignoring semi-negative comment above...

Good for him. Glad to hear he can still play at least a little bit.

Glad to hear it. Hopefully he will be careful not to do too much too quickly.

How much did it cost me?

Great to see him getting well enough to get some good exercise.

I wish I could do something noble enough so I could get the chance to meet him. No doubt it would be impossible to have a deep and meaningful conversation, but he seems like such a sweet guy.

Probably one of the loneliest people on the planet.

Glad that he recovered to the point he could play tennis.

Do we have a score for the match?
