Emperor resumes official duties at service for March 11 firefighter victims

Emperor Akihito resumed his official duties on Tuesday after spending 18 days in hospital this month.

Akihito, 77, left the University of Tokyo Hospital last Thursday after being treated for a high fever and mild bronchial pneumonia. He had been admitted on Nov 6.

His eldest son, Crown Prince Naruhito, took over his official duties while he was ill.

On Tuesday, the emperor and Empress Michiko attended a service in Tokyo to honor fallen firefighters, including 226 who lost their lives in the March 11 disaster, the Imperial Household Agency said.

God bless this emperor who is at least making effort visiting the victims. Id like to see Ozawa or someone else from the government do the same, even if they are genki.

I smell some political infighting here, that younger brother and his wife must be really, really POWER HUNGRY! They bore a baby BOY something this OLDER brother and his wife MASAKO sama have not been able to do and may never be able to do so ah yes, behind all those FAKE smiles their at the Imperial Palace, people trying to become the New Emperor while the guy who is still alive well is still alive so they can not become the newest emperor here until Akihito kicks the bucket right??

I really like him, but he is getting to old. He needs to retire and pass this duty to prince.
