I hope that they give him adequate pain relief after the operation. Japanese hospitals are notorious for expecting the patient to grin and bear it - a large dose of gaman. It is quite well-known that good post-operative analgesia leads to better recovery and less post-op stress.

i didnt cared for the emperor until the march 11 disaster when i saw them visiting the tohoku area and sitting seiza, bowing and making the victims feel better with their support. it simply moves me.. i wish the operation succeeds

Bless him. I don't know him personally but he seems a lovely caring man who greatly cares for his people. I wish him a speedy recovery from here on my own hospital bed :( !

best of luck to you Emperor, and to the surgeons. i am sure no surgeon wants to be known as the one that killed the Emperor.

I second that. I know from family members that the first couple of days after open heart surgery is quite painful, even with American strength meds. I was in a Japanese hospital for a few days, and the the only thing that helped the pain was the bottle of Advil I brought. The meds they gave me sure didn't do anything.

Anyhow, I hope the Emperor gets well, and lives a lot longer.

get well soon Emperor Akihito!!

I only saw the emperor from pictures and TV footage, not personally. After what I have seen, just a question; is he physically fit for such a grave surgery?

great news on the success! I hope he gets well soon

No-one would accuse the Surgeons of that - it would be his dodgy 78-year-old ticker that killed him in worst case scenario. All the best old fella!

I wish His Majesty a speedy recovery.Such a dear man.I've heard that it's his intention to attend the 1 year memorial of 3.11. Good luck Sir.

I wish the emperor the best of luck on his road to recovery and I'm glad the surgery went well.

With this article though was there really any need to mention his daughter as a former princess who left the royal household after marrying a commoner. Couldn't they of just said that his daughter visited him.

best to he Emperor. he and the Empress impress me time and again with their devotion to people.

I'm glad to hear everything went well. Don't know why those who are wishing him well are getting the thumbs down. I'm certainly no royalist or imperialist or whatever they're called, but still. I was just walking around in central Tokyo and there were police everywhere. I was thinking maybe it was something to do with the emperor's surgery but didn't think anymore. I then heard a policeman say something about Michiko-sama to a passer-by. And sure enough, 5 seconds later, she was about 10 feet in front of me, in her car. Bit surprised they didn't use a car with black windows.

That's just to let you know why she will never appear in any formal family photos anymore! Notice her two brothers are always included but she's just disappeared. Really sad! It's as if she's become a nun and renounced all links to her relatives.

Well, would you look at that - a bit of good news for a change. Good luck to you, Sir. Rest up and recover well.

Wishing you good health!

Heal well, heal quickly, your country awaits.

Bless you and get well soon.

What I really don't get is why the average person likes them so much. You really know very little about this person and what he is like IRL. Yet you act as if he's your best friend and the greatest person ever.

Stephen Jez you obviously know nothing about Japanese culture of its history. Otherwise you would understand the significance of the Emperor and his family to the nation of Japan.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

Oh I know the significance, I just don't understand why the sheeple would put him up on a pedestal.

Really? We all thought you and the Imperial family were the best of friends from way back. LOL!!!

But seriously, I too hope the Emperor recovers soon. Japan doesn't need to go through that sort of crisis and pain right now.

Maybe we are reading different posts but I dont see anyone acting like he is their best friend and the greatest person ever. I just see a bunch of warm kind people wishing good health to an old man who works tirelessly for his country. I also see an idiot or two but I wisely choose to ignore! ;)

My best wishes prayers for His Imperial Majesty.

Funny, my original post was removed for being "impolite" yet yours is still here? Favoritism on the mods part maybe?

IMO you should be caring about the well being of your fellow man over some figurehead. I'm not wishing the guy ill will, I just don't see why people think they actually have some sort of connection to him when they really know nothing about him. If you want to wish well to people who work hard for their country and/or provide a service to society then your well wishes are sorely misguided.
