His embassy also aided the Japanese people in the aftermath of the 2011 disaster, for example serving Iranian dishes to people in Iwate Prefecture.

I know of many who join groups of volunteers, Japanese and foreigners, who do this and continue to do this up until this day in places like Kesunuma that are nowhere near full recovery.

They pay for their own accommodations and transportation there as well. And receive no recognition from the LDP government.

Former U.S. Ambassador Caroline Kennedy was just awarded the fall decoration in Nov 2021.

Not certain of the exact work Ambassador John Roos spearheaded at the time but surely he, and Japan, can’t forget and will acknowledge the 24,000 U.S. servicemembers, 189 aircraft and 24 naval ships of Operation Tomodachi that did all the land, air & sea work (where they were allowed) to assist the Japanese people in their time of need.

Thank you for your service, to all the men and women of NATO’s armed forces and civilian support personnel.

Most Japanese know he is great.

" I know of many who join groups of volunteers, Japanese and foreigners, who do this and continue to do this up until this day in places like Kesunuma that are nowhere near full recovery.."

Oh yeah, Rescue Japan, an NGO based in Tokyo and consists of volunteers from all over the world did and continue to do a marvelous job in Kesenuma, Soma city and other areas badly affected by the March 11 earthquake. They have never been mentioned in passing and have received no recognition whatsoever. At any rate, we are not working for any such recognition by the J government. We derive pride and satisfaction from helping human beings and not looking for any such recognition.

BTW, just asking. Has any African been awarded or recognized in these Spring award events? Just curious.

Speaking of that time, Roos said he felt that the two countries "continue to hold a special position in attempting to eliminate all nuclear weapons from the face of the earth," an objective also sought by Obama.

I'm sorry but the U.S. and the conservative side of Nihon "attempting to eliminate all nuclear weapons from the face of the earth,"?? Mr. Roos was ambassador from where? Not to rain on a parade or point out all of the deserving that other commenters have mentioned were NOT honored, but I have to wonder why such a statement as the above quoted was included in this article. Is 'lip service' also worth special recognition even when actual behavior contradicts it completely? Or is 'recognition' even justified when one does what one is expected to do in their job? Attending the Hiroshima ceremonies against political pressure might qualify in a way as some small recognition and atonement for over-rationalized U.S. war crimes. But helping out in the face of tragedy is simply the least we would expect of anyone in his position. Sorry, but awarding 'Gold Stars' as rewards for people doing what they are expected to do anyway failed for me in Kindergarten...but then "from each according to their abilities" just seemed like good sense even then and did not desire 'awards' other than self-satisfaction.

Decorations by the state reminds me of a certain third country's generals at ceremonies wearing uniforms pinned with honor medals so closely as if they extended to the back of the uniform.
