Heh heh heh...wonder what goes on in this bar

And how to you remain little known and hard to find after a published review? File a lawsuit and have that story published worldwide! That nondescript door will soon be Google-searchable, complete with photos and driving directions.

A Prohibition Speakeasy?

That nondescript door will soon be Google-searchable, complete with photos and driving directions.

I think that's the point - it already is since it's on Tabelog.

You seem to miss the point that that door had already been opened by tabelog posting their info. If they were still unknown and doing something to bring attention to themselves your point would be applicable, but once they are made known, then making efforts to close the door does not equate to opening it. On top of this, the lawsuit was not their first step, their first step was to ask tabelog to take it down - hardly a method of bringing attention to themselves.

That nondescript door will soon be Google-searchable, complete with photos and driving directions.

If it's on tabelog, it's already google searchable, and there already are photos on the site, which will also have an address and a map. This lawsuit is not creating this circumstance, Tabelog created it by adding the bar to their site.

@Ed Smith: I agree haha, probably the worst move they could have made is this lawsuit.

Talk about crying wolf. They are doubling down on their publicity campaign now with that lawsuit. Maybe not enough people noticed the magazin article? This posturing about playing hard to find is clearly a scam.

People in Japan are attracted to bars that are obscure. I have been to a few variations of this. You impress your date by knowing of some cool little bar behind an obscure, unmarked door with a lock. It's fun, that's all. Everybody likes to have their secret little club. No need to let your imagination run wild. (Actually, I've seen plenty of very wild stuff in bars where anyone can walk in.) Tablelog is clearly in the wrong, at least ethically. It's common courtesy to remove content at the request of the person or business being covered. If I owned the bar, I'd be angry too. Not sure if I would go the lawsuit route, because it does draw more attention, but I'd consider it at least.

WilliB: Sorry bro, I know I'm being anal, but how is this crying wolf?

Anyway, just curious if any of you (who think the bar is bringing more publicity) know the bar name and/or location?

Sounds like a nice little fire trap with being dead bolted in & all!

Uh...You're welcome!!! Suing because of free positive publicity!?

A solution would be to be a "members only" establishment.

The owner runs this bar as a hobby or a business?

I salute the bar for trying to stay exclusive and doing their own thing while shunning popularity! Many people needs a slice of that mentality!

I hope they lose in court and have to pay damages for being anal.

Ha, I went to this bar two years ago! Was at a nearby bar, made some friends who then took me there. Was a lovely establishment, went back a few times and we made mochi one night. Couldn't find it again on a recent visit. Wanted to write a post on my blog but couldn't find the address. Lucky I didn't haha. I understand their point of view but it's the age we live in. Hard to run an place like this in the age of social media.

So... they open the door for anybody who rings the bell... but now there are too many ringing the bell? Take the money you're making on the new influx of customers and start ANOTHER exclusive joint somewhere else - but only let your prior "regulars" know about it. This way everybody is happy - the late-comers still think they are coming to a trendy place, and the original clientele get to resume their exclusive and intimate shenanigans.

The bar has no rights to tell anyone not to talk about them...no matter what the reason is. I can't see how they would win this.

asked the popular Tabelog web site to take down a client review

Was it a good review or a bad review?
