Naruhito will wear a Western tailcoat. Akihito wore a Western morning coat when he became emperor in January 1989.

Further evidence that Japanese culture is eroding before our very eyes.

It "eroded" back in 1871.

"After the Emperor appeared in Western dress, government officials and the educated elite began wearing Western-style clothing in public. In 1871, the Emperor issued a mandate requiring high officials to wear Western clothes during business hours or when at official functions."

Great find, OssanAmerica. It always bugged me a bit that Japanese royalty don't wear traditional Japanese garb; now at least I have a context.

Forget the outfits...point is how dignified and deeply rooted in culture is the succession. Japanese royalty have taken their rightful place as beacons of world peace.
