""There is no concern" that chemicals in the plant could pollute the environment in the neighborhood, said a company official who declined to give his name."

BS - The chemicals required to produce resin for printer ink or chemicals used in the paper making process are often toxic and flammable.

Of course this is nothing like Bhopal, in India, but what the company official said is likely total BS.

A year or two ago there was a huge problem with staff at printing companies getting cancer from the printing ink.

When that stuff goes up in flames, is a 100 meters exclusion zone really safe enough? I would not like to breathe it, whatever the spokesman might say.

“A year or two ago there was a huge problem with staff at printing companies getting cancer from the printing ink.”

Are you referring to the cases of bile duct cancer in workers who used 1,2-dichloropropane and/or dichloromethane for ink removal (not the ink itself) in offset printing? There was a cluster of cases in workers at a company in Osaka, and I believe there have been similar cases found in Europe. It’s also my understanding that use of those chemicals for that purpose was discontinued years ago.
