"When the Allied powers tried Japanese leaders for war crimes at the International Military Tribunal for the Far East, they considered filing charges over the use of poison gas by the Japanese army.
"But they eventually did not do so, and some believe this is because the United States sought to keep the option of using such gas after World War II."
America's deals with the devil in Japan after World War II (including full pardons for the members of the infamous Unit 731) make me ashamed to be an American citizen.

I think this is different from other claims against Japan regarding its wartime past in that unlike those the damage wasn't inflicted during the war, but much more recently (such as the guy mentioned in the article who was exposed to the gas in 1982).
Regardless of what the courts say I think there is a very strong moral obligation for the Japanese government to take responsibility for this.

Many of these attacks were on villages and towns trying to depopulate strategic areas. Of course the victims were mostly civilians.
"During the war, Japanese troops carried out poison gas attacks in China at least 2,091 times, leaving more than 80,000 people dead or injured, according to a Chinese study."

Two things can be wrong at the same time

War is war. USA didn’t compensate Nagasaki, Hiroshima or Tokyo firebombing victims. Just war sucks.

As much as I feel sorry for those effected, but caution needs to be exerted when it comes to giving money out to Chinese, they will milk any system dry, just as they're already doing for other schemes.

So, the reasoning is that the Japanese Army is good.
Because they are not as bad as Mao Ze-Dong.
Is that what it is?

I wish them luck, but aid for things done in 1937-1945 Sino-Japanese War is going to be a tough sell

The sins of the fathers are being ignored!
Amazingly the Japanese government can spend vast amounts of money on sporting events and funerals but fail abysmally to take care of the health of people here and abroad by detoxifying the environment.

Unit 731 and its affiliated units (Unit 1644 and Unit 100, among others) were involved in the research, development and experimental deployment of epidemic-creating biowarfare weapons in assaults against the Chinese populace.
The US continued the experiments and the use of these in Vietnam and Cambodia and still has 400 bio labs today incuding in Ukraine. Basically, the US sold its soul to the devil by pardoning Unit 731 members in exchange for the research and knowlege to develop weapons.

Best get over it. We cut deals with both the Nazis and Japan as we were already facing a new greater menace by 1945. The same one that's murdring civilians in Ukraine today under a different label.

The JGSDF removes old Imperial Japanese military ordinances in Japan. Is China prepared to let the JSDF enter China to remove them? It seems to me that the Chinese govt would rather do it on their own. It's the NGOs and civilians asking for money.

His/her point is that whatever the chinanese claim that the I.J. Army did during WW2, it is nothing compared to what mao did to millions of his own people.
And it was more than 20 million.

I'm not sure how far the current revisionism has shifted, but it's funny (for lack of a better word) to are the inconsistencies within Japan's own narrative.
They either went to "save" the rest of Asia or fought in the war because "there was no other way". Either way, any wrongdoing are denied.
At the same time, there are tourist attraction like the former poison gas factory in Seto Inland Sea. Who was all that gas produced there over years used on? Benevolent poison made to liberate the poor people of Asia?
Anyway, good luck to those affected. I'm afraid this might not be the best time to ask the J government for any liability due to the turn it's been taking for the last decade or so.

I hear that coin pan a-rattling again!

yeap what else is new.... nobody is ever responsible for any wrongdoing by the govt here...

Mao’s regime killed at least 20 million of his own people!

You mean the US embargo of China for two decades.
