That includes those of partial Japanese ancestry.
Interesting link, zichi. Of those 1.5 million, about one third are are permanent residents oversea (i.e emigrants). The others are classed as long term residents, e.g. company employees posted abroad, students, etc.
I'm not sure how accurate those numbers are. Trying to find equivalent numbers for the UK gives figures ranging from 5 million to 13 million.
Would the US equivalent not be something like how many New Yorkers live in Florida?

Zichi,
Currently, there are over 3,800,000 Japanese living abroad. 1.5 million in the US alone.

There are also many Filipinos working here in the States, and not only in hospitals. Our mailman is from the Philippines.

Am I right in wondering why any Filipinos would be interested in immigrating here as care givers for fonly ive years?

Disillusioned, no not all 340 will come. There are 341 applicants. Probably only a small percentage will pass the tests and be accepted.
Disillusioned
Yeah, they come! All 340 of them from a country with a population of over 100 million people. Obviously you have no idea how many Filipinos emmegrate to other countries aevery year.

So they earn six times as much as if they were working back home? It's not as if the wages in Japan are that high in the first place.

Most westerners which I can say is a good 95% leave Japan after they found out how strict and complicated life is there.
The very few that stays do it because they got marry there.
And about these filipino laides that will come here I hope that they can get the same respect, rights.salary and dignity that the Japanese will get, though I highly doubt it.
Also we’re talking about a very small number of applicants, less than 400?
It’s nothing compared to the needs of a quick aging population like Japan.
This seems a flop, like the flop that the new visa system is.
And these are official numbers, can’t argue against them.
Truth is that Japan is little attractive as a living place, still great to visit as a tourist.
Do the hustle
And, of the 340 odd applicants 80% of them will fail the Japanese language test.
I can understand the attraction for Filipinos coming to work in Japan, but their dreams are quickly shattered when they realize they will be working like slaves for minimum wage and being taxed nearly 50% of their salaries with health insurance, unemployment insurance, city tax, sales tax and that pyramid scam they call a pension. Perhaps it is better than what they can get at home, but it is far from an attractive offer.

Sure, and then the good nurses that got to learn the language and the skills cannot keep the job because, you know, they are not Japanese so they must return to their countries after 5 years here.

Good for them.
There should be no lessening of standards for learning the Japanese language for these nurses. We're not talking staffing Lawson's markets, we're talking about critical care and life and death.
