Parents can use Google parental controls to limit their kids screen time and set a time limit together with an on and lock time. This way you give them the opportunity to use their digital device without worrying they spend too much time or accessing sites or downloading apps you'd prefer them not to. Problem solved

For Japan uni students 4-8 hours of "screen time" a day is the new normal. Nothing to worry about according to them.

Parents would then have to do some actual parenting. Expect nothing ti change

you have not only hit the proverbial nail on the head, you have smashed it to smithereens. Most parents have neither the time nor inclination to monitor their children. YouTube, Tiktok and video games have assumed parenting roles in modern times because of slacker parents. Smdh..

""Too much screen time was also linked to depression, said Yamagata, who has been studying children for more than 30 years.""
Yes indeed, it is well documented that the less screen time you have the better off you are, and if you don't believe that try once and see, I know high school kids who did give up their smart phones and went back to old style which are available at all providers and some told me they are relieved and less stressed out.

Exactly, the less the parents care the faster the kids have a smartphone with unlimited internet access.

Technology is slowly helping.
Apple introduced "Screentime" a while back, but Kids quickly found ways around it, and shared those ways amongst themselves... Apple tried to deny it, and probably still does to this day.
Some Router Manufacturers, such as Buffalo introduced "recently" similar screentime-esque settings, but Buffalo/Melconic is probably the worst of all to use this as an example.
Some (if not all) Public Schools in Japan ban Kids from taking to School a Phone... though this means Parents can track their kids whereabouts.... I'm considering "Air-tags", though I wonder if that will get banned too.

I think some children should set limits on their parents net usage !

No Japanese person I know uses Google.

Urge not possible (worldwide). Babies and small kids get a tablet right in their faces every single time they're on a stroller, child seat at restaurants, car, park, etc.
Yes. I understand parents need a break. But come on!

There’s plenty of evidence that the Internet can make you stupid.

There is very very very much that is excellent excelent excelent in each and every computer inthe world. Just as there is very very very much that is bad bad bad in each and every computer in the world. Just as there is very very very much that is evil evil evil in every computer in the world. It is every parent's duty to make sure the children only watch the exellent and good programs. And never the bad and evil programs.

My children are not allowed to pick up our smartphones or tablets let alone use one! My eldest, who is 10 asked me the other day when he will get one. I laughed and said “son when you are working and can afford to buy one. He has the standard learning tablet that is purely educational I believe most Japanese kids have which does various subject exercises with the odd game thrown in between to make it entertaining. He does a computer programming course once a week. TV is bad enough in zombifying their brains and that is limited too. Weekends are sport and we are always out visiting new places or in the mountains fishing or swimming or having a BBQ. I have told them already they they both need to see the world first before burying their faces in a tiny screen! Toured Hokkaido this summer for 3 weeks camping in different locations…they loved it and so did we!
