Another race to the bottom, late stage capitalism article.
If the conditions of Vietnamese trainees are any indicator, they are in for a very fulfilling and culturally enriching time in Japan.
An upside; at least in Japan they will not be arrested if they engage in sex outside of marriage?
Yubaru
Let's call it what it is, foreign workers, not "trainees". It's BS to call them trainees as they are here working as underpaid employees doing jobs that companies can not find Japanese workers for, and paying them less than what they would need to as well.
virusrex
Hopefully the lower amount of debt necessary for the trainees to come to Japan also means they are at a lower risk of becoming victims of abuse from the companies they are working at.
JeffLee
They pay thousands of dollars to join the program? Shouldn't it be the other way round? The companies that profit from their labour should pay to get them. So much about this program is about exploitation.
Rodney
Average salary in Indonesia is between $200~800 a year. How can they pay these official people smugglers $3000 plus interest to come here?
Yubaru
Technically the "program" costs nothing to join, it's the agencies/headhunters, who do the paperwork, pay the application fees upfront, find the companies, and place them, that cost money.
noriahojanen
The trainee programme will soon be revised or dismantled due to criticism and redundancy.
For the programme to continue to run, its selection process and oversight should be improved so that dubious and exploitive agencies and host workplaces would be eradicated.
Mr Kipling
Yubaru...
You are mostly correct. Training is in name only, or just instruction on how to do the job. The import workers do not generally get paid less than Japanese workers. Its just that the employers can not find Japanese workers willing to do the work for the payment offered. Japan does not have a worker shortage. There are actually millions of under-employed people in Japan. The problem is they do not want the jobs available for the salaries offered.

Indonesia’s unemployment problem is due to corruption.
https://news.gallup.com/poll/157073/corruption-continues-plague-indonesia.aspx
As a country full of natural resources Indonesia could easily bring its own people out of poverty.
I would propose that these ‘trainees’ are even caught up in that web too.
Mr Kipling
Please post the job offers that offer two pay rates. One for Japanese and one for foreigners.
You can't because there are none. These import workers are willing to work for what is low pay in Japan but huge compared to their own country. Which is the ONLY reason they come.
Japan needs to get the under employed housewives and stay at home with mum and dad 20-30 yer olds out of the house and into the factories.

Last time I was in Jakarta they had Japanese recruiters from these agencies in most of the major shipping malls. They get a cheap salary even by Japanese standards but will still make more than they ever could in their own countries. Most are happy to do it. It’s not slave labor compared to working in a Jakarta sweatshop!
Mr Kipling
Gaijinland..
Yes, these are bottom end jobs. But exactly the same salary as offered to Japanese.
Yubaru
Where am I incorrect? They get paid less, as they are not permanent workers and do not receive bonuses either. If they paid a decent wage, and one that was as a permanent employee, people would come.
Japan does have a worker shortage, and it's going to get worse with the ever increasing age of the actual work force itself.
Lindsay
They pay these ‘trainees’ a low salary, treat them like slaves and make them pay inflated rent for lodgings. On top of that they make them pay into the pension scam which is money they’ll never see again. They may very well be leaving a bad situation but their life in Japan is not all sushi and cherry blossoms.
Rodney
would be nice to have one of these interns to comment on this site about their experiences
Jim
Well these so called trainees / interns want to work long hours on bare minimum salary, be bullied by coworkers/ bosses, be looked down at and get treated like garbage so it’s their choice to choose Japan for this! They know all this yet try to sign up for these programs so it’s their choice to be treated whichever way the management want to.
Ken
Salaries range between 1,000 per hr to 1,300 per hr.and if one does Zangyo or nightshift, plus 25%
Working conditions are usually horrible, sweating the heck out in a factory line screaming at and cursing each other and hell breaks loose when you go to the toilet before the short 5 minute break.
Imagine if you have diarrhea or constipation.
smithinjapan
Ah, the government-sponsored human trafficking program still alive and well. I guess when they can exploit you for all your worth and then demand you pay off the debt for doing it, why would they stop it?
factchecker
More Indonesians in Japan's cheap labour exploitation program due to racism and the tightwads of industry.
Headline fixed, you're welcome!
Mr Kipling
So which job pays less than Japanese rates?
Crickets......
Anyone?
Didn't think so....
Mr Kipling
Yubaru.....
Saying they get paid less than Japanese for doing the same job. There are many non permanent Japanese workers. Also many without bonuses.
Bingo. But they don't so Japanese will not do these kind of jobs, hence the imports.
Not exactly, there are plenty of people underemployed.in Japan. The problem is a shortage of people willing to DO this kind of work for the salary offered.
Again... which job pays non Japanese a lower rate than Japanese for the same work?
Hermitage Nads
In a few years not even the indonesians will want to come, and Japan will have to import slave labor from even poorer African countries.
Gobshite
Japanese modern slavery is because of corruption. Open your eyes..
