Pandemic, celebrity deaths likely trigger rise of suicides in Japan

Hopefully that suicide forest gets heavily patrolled during the holiday period.

Vague desire sounds like a typical Japanese response to not offend the other party questioning them especially if they are older then the suicide potential being.

Unfortunately, This is an unstoppable and unresolvable issue in japan.

but, Maybe ,it can be reduced by some extent.

The title of this story is a bit sensationalist but I guess that's to make one click it. Sad though.

Not sure if the writer thought about the choice of word or not but using 'jumping' to describe a rise in a sentence about suicides is a poor choice.

Everyone has their personal problems and demons but I never understood the desire to kill yourself. I’d rather be begging for food on the street than die. It’s so selfish and irresponsible. Maybe if the Japanese didn’t have such a taboo against mental illnesses, the numbers would be lower. Antidepressants actually do help.

Being a nation that encourages, nay, expects conformity, will inevitably lead to copycat cases of suicide given the constant reporting of cases in the media. Stop this practice and cases will drop. It’s not brain science.

Men and boys are far more likely to be victims of suicide than women or girls.

It's a ugly fact that society does not want to address.

I would like to know whether increase of suicide in Japan during the pandemic is particular or not, comparing with the other countries. However, I read the following sentence in the article of CNN recently.

"Japan is one of the few major economies to disclose timely suicide data -- the most recent national data for the US, for example, is from 2018." 

Is this true ?

The capitalist culture of money, mammon and materialism combined with the poverty of intellectual and spiritual resources can strip many of their mental self-defenses and render them bereft of the fortitude and grit to face the abyss of existence, like pandemics, which have never figured into the fake, fanciful picture of reality entertained by so many of us.

Life goes on. take a shrinks chill pill and relax. No reason to be suicidal. I’m immune to that disease.

Like people in many other countries, Japanese (notably the youth) have been prone to suicides when things become unsolvable and over-threatening in normal years. But 2020 was an extraordinary year, the negative impacts of the pandemic on human psychology have proven to be too severe and heavy for many people, thus compounding the suicidal effect.

Globally, an estimate 1.08 million people died of suicides this year, excluding the many unreported cases due to social stigma in a number of countries. This is a record number, and it appears to get worse in 2021. What a bitter pill to swallow for numerous families..

Seems you clearly have a horse in the race with this statement. Obviously you don't want to see facts regarding male suicide and want the see everything through the female victim goggles. Hence when my original reply was correct as you have proved. Also when you are conversing one to one with another person using 'us' to make it look like the forum is in some way related to you or your viewpoint looks quite silly, have the strength to standby your viewpoint alone.

That aside, any suicide is terrible and a waste of a life. Female or male and especially the youth with all their lives ahead.

An increase in suicide following widely reported celebrity suicides has been observed in a number of countries not known for expecting a high level of conformity.

Do I interpret the text right? They forced for many years men with sufficient salaries for the whole children-rich families out of the working business for also becoming part of it, then of course the average sank drastically for all workers and employees , male and female, and now these same women have finally to face their self-inforced problems of low incomes and double pressure at work and at home and commit suicide in a view of that stupid error on cost of all? Yep about 70% of suicides in Japan are men. From 2018 it was 9.4 women & 22.9men per 100,000people.

It shouldn't be a competition obviously but good luck finding an article about male suicide, there just isnt many, most dont care about men only women, when we should care for EVERYONE

I can understand the pandemic contributing to suicides... people lose their jobs, their incomes, get no support from the government, perhaps divorce, can't meet family, etc. But killing yourself because of a celebrity death? I thought the Japanese were all "stoic" and not lacking so much in self confidence that they'll jump in front of a train if a celebrity dies. Wow.
