"If Japan intends to return to the Southern Ocean we will be there," said the founder of the conservation group Sea Shepherd and the Captain Paul Watson Foundation (CPWF).

"We are not protesting Japanese whaling. We are simply requesting they obey the law."

After Japan's extradition failed and Paul Watson being released wherever Japanese whale hunting ships go, CPWF will go and more news will cover that.

The more Japan try to silence him, the more coverage Japan whale hunting will get.

"We need to learn to live on this planet in harmony with all those other species that share this world with us.”

I agree with you 100%, Mr Watson. I’m sure you are aware that in the Faroe Islands, which is part of Denmark, islanders beat and kill hundreds of dolphins every year and the Danish government is in no hurry to stop this brutal practice. Now you’re a free man. Hopefully you will raise your voice and criticize Denmark’s appalling double standards.

That terrorist should be behind bars.

I,m sick of the man and this story

-6 ( +15 / -21 )

He can go to France, maybe Russia but he must be always afraid of going in other countries' territorial waters. He is still under red notice.

There are a few countries and groups of indigenous people who hunt whales for subsistance. Japan is not one of them. They hunt whales for profit only. However, there are thousands of tons of whale meat in freezers around Japan that they can't give away because nobody wants to eat it. They tried to give it schools but the refused it. Another international war Japan won't give up on. We all know what happened the last time they dug in against the rest of the world.

Anyone who supports whaling for any reason at all has no humanity and no understanding of the world we live in. What a man. He will succeed.

-19 ( +17 / -36 )

Will you also condemn Faroe Islands whale killing "tradition", or is it only "tradition" when western countries do it ?

12 ( +25 / -13 )

@GuruMick I, too, am sick of this story. I do derive a bit of pleasure from all the law and order types gnashing their teeth.

-11 ( +7 / -18 )

In an ideal world we would stop all acts of cruelty against animals...and (even less likely) each other. However, I reckon that we are currently living in the age of 意地を張る - maybe we could call it the "era of doubling down" - when people's first reaction to being criticised or questioned is not to engage in discourse with the other person, but to instinctively do more of what the other person disapproves of.

"You don't like whaling? Fine, we'll double our catch"

"You don't approve of trophy hunting? Fine, I'm going to go and kill as many lions as I can"

I wouldn't entirely be surprised if Japan actually now goes ahead and ramps up its whaling activities as a form of middle finger to not just Paul Watson, but anyone who dares criticise "our culture" (the ultimate get-out-of-jail free card).

-13 ( +8 / -21 )

His publicist wrote this "article." That's how it reads, anyway.

He attacks ships and injures people. He's going to kill somebody one of these days.

Some "peace and harmony activist."

Japan still having a big sulk over this guy? How pathetic. No one else is talking about him, the terrible event in Germany more important to the worlds media.

Move on!

-12 ( +17 / -29 )

A man with a mission.

-14 ( +12 / -26 )

So now he is free he mouths off about vowing to save whales. But when in custody he said nothing. What a brave man he is!

11 ( +22 / -11 )

Mr. Watson once said during an interview that "" Animals have managed to live on this planet way before humans arrived, they DON'T need us to survive, but we need them. All was fine with them until we arrived"'

This really sums it all as to why Humans are the MENACE

-18 ( +6 / -24 )

not humans. Corporate greed. Most humans have lived in harmony with the planet. Greed has caused this. Whales hunted to near extension for greed (the oils that had were sold) other fish and animals have always been hunted for greed and it still continues. Japan hunts are for greed. Dolphins are a rare worldwide kill. Japan also has the slaughter in the bay and any negative post about it gets taken down everywhere. One of the most intelligent animals on the planet and people best them to death. It’s sickening. But whaling is about greed and I hope he succeeds. Whaling should be stopped.

I have no problem with you if you are against whaling in general and support organizations working to abolish whaling, including Watson. I for one do not care either way on the issue. However, as someone who has spent considerable time at sea I will consider you to be wholy irrational if you excuse Watson's "direct action" tactics which is nothing more than vigilantism. What he continues to do on the high seas, where even mundane actions can easily lead to fatal consequences, intentionally places other mariners at risk injury or death and cannot be condoned. The ends simply should not justify his means. Just remember when one of these days someone loses their life in one of his DA operations that you enabled it with your support to this egomaniacal manchild.

Yes, further anyone who supports killing and eating of any animalia has no humanity, world produces more than ample vegetarian food, there is no need to kill and eat anyone.

He has already been arrested in the Faroe Islands for trying to shoo the whales and dolphins away from the Grind. He was arrested for unauthorized entry in their territorial waters I believe.

Called the fact the EU would not extradite him. Macron called it in and twisted Copenhagen's arm (with the old Paris veto on EU foreign policy). Was never going to happen.

The attempted political persecution of him has created quite the nautical Robin Hood image of him, especially in France but also beyond.

Certainly is an enormous educational campaign on many fronts.

I vow to enjoy a whale meal at the soonest opportunity, and no one really cares about it. This guy is so last century’s news.

When the Kangei Maru rolled out, there was a press event held on board, where a gentle crew member kindly went out of his way to answer a question from the press and explained his job by showing a large Japanese fish knife, not knowing that the press showed him as if he were a torturer.

It is no different than the civil disobedience used by the US civil rights movement, and before that the Suffragette Movement and before that the Underground Railroad. When governments won't step up citizens have to stir the pot to make things happen. I could not be more supportive of what they are doing.

I'm not surprised that someone here would equate animal conservancy with the fundamental rights of black and female human beings, but that's some unhinged moral equivalence for you.

15 ( +19 / -4 )

The old man is nothing but a pirate! Sea Shepard don’t make the laws..they are nothing but a group of pirates lol the danish govt just freed pirates lol

Us humans are completely dependent on a functioning ocean ecosystem. All the aquatic beings and plants must be in their natural balance or everyone and every thing in the ocean and on dry land suffers. Yes, ocean conservancy is every bit as important as civil rights. Maybe moreso as the physical survival of all of us depends on it. Open your eyes.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

Baloney. Pirates steal the goods on the ships they raid and sell the goods to pay for future piracy. Sea Shepherd isn't stealing anything, and they get their funding from donations, not theft. Unlike pirates Sea Shepherd is doing the world a service by exposing and messing with the barbaric practices of the Japanese and Faroe Island whalers who are subhumans who deserve no respect.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

Not baloney. The definition of Piracy is not limited to theft.

Violence on the high seas is considered piracy if it meets the following criteria:

It's an illegal act of violence or detention

It's committed for private ends

It's directed against a ship, aircraft, persons, or property on the high seas

It's directed against a ship, aircraft, persons, or property in a place outside the jurisdiction of any State

It's an act of voluntary participation in the operation of a ship or aircraft with knowledge that it's a pirate ship or aircraft

It's an act of inciting or intentionally facilitating an act described in the above criteria.

The reason of him being free, is that Denmark refused to hand him to Japan, due to the medieval Japanese "Justice" system, a system based on torture and force confessions, a system of "guilty until proven innocent", a system that was exposed during the Ghosn sham trial. They knew that the kangaroo courts in Japan will do nothing to have a fair trial, so instead they chosen the right path.

Sadly this is the truth, and you can downvote as much as you like, it won't change anything.
