Why do these chairs always look the same?

1 ( +11 / -10 )

Every common household should do their part to save power …

so it can be diverted to unnecessarily-oversized and air conditioned meeting halls like we see here.

Japan is making the same mistake as the EU. Destroying your own economy to placate the jealous, wrathful United States.

Japan is going to miss the upcoming golden age of the multipolar world order.

-13 ( +17 / -30 )

Good luck with setting your AC at 28 in the middle of a Japanese summer. Have fun with that.

18 ( +29 / -11 )

The government said Tuesday it will ask companies and households across Japan to save electricity due to a possible power crunch in the summer and winter.

so all year round, are they so stupid they are…. Ok yes they are that stupid! Again we all have to suck it up because the LDP are too inept to plan 1 week ahead let alone 1 year. I’m an idiot qualified to be in government seems to be the case.

15 ( +22 / -7 )

Where is the impetus in this government?

The are the worst, feckless, self serving bunch of *** asking people to always make sacrifices and doing JS themselves-useless!

14 ( +22 / -8 )

I have solar panels, but I wish we had cheap Russians gas stations so I buy their gas.

-17 ( +12 / -29 )

Unlike 2012 the Japanese countryside is now covered with solar power plants so what are they doing with all the energy they produce?

19 ( +26 / -7 )

Let's see all the offices full of drones in Kasumigaseki turn off their power at 7pm to set an example to we mere mortals that going home at a reasonable time is not a crime.

My office is 26-27degrees year round anyway. I would love to see the government try to persuade the legions of arafos that 23 degrees is not the same as a Siberian winter.

10 ( +17 / -7 )

This issue is entirely self-inflicted, and not just in Japan. Idiotic governments have been hoodwinked into chasing the green energy fairy and abandoning reliable energy sources for feel-good, pie-in-the-sky renewable subsidy farms. Aided and abetted by fear-mongering campaigns about global warming catastrophism and manufactured paranoia about nuclear power, especially newer designs.

Of course, we won't see people like Kishi cutting back on his consumption. This is strictly for the plebs.

2 ( +18 / -16 )

Utter incompetence on a massive scale.

LDP = Lazy decrepit people

The government said Tuesday it will ask companies and households across Japan to save electricity due to a possible power crunch in the summer and winter.

Pachinko parlors will still be going from early morning til late at night with enough power usage to light up whole neighborhoods...because you know who they pay off.

8 ( +13 / -5 )

As a community we are all actively focused on the cost of energy.

It is second nature, our aged community cant afford not to

0 ( +6 / -6 )

The first job of a government is to keep the lights on. They are failing to deliver.

4 ( +13 / -9 )

Better late than never.

But about 45 years too late.

-3 ( +6 / -9 )

After the Great Eastern quake, I actually enjoyed half the fluorescent lights being turned off - much more relaxing - so I hope some places will do the same.

On the other hand, I noticed that pachinko parlors carried on as usual with flashing lights, blaring music etc. I'm sure they'll react the same way again, and the gov will ask us to cover for them.

9 ( +14 / -5 )

Before asking people and companies to save power, the government should restart nuclear power plants immediately and stop wasting taxpayers’ money on solar and wind power generation.

0 ( +13 / -13 )

Solution: Shut off all the eye pollution. Bright commercial lighting in every large city, 24 hours a day is crazy. Start with Tokyo's Ginza.

11 ( +14 / -3 )

Time to reconsider and reign in the number of vending machines on 24 hours a day. Small-ish park near me I walked around at midnight last night. I counted 11 vending machines in clusters of 2-3. Convenience gone crazy in this country.

Clowns running this country

Stay Home, Save Power!

The first job of a government is to keep the lights on

That's the kind of opinion authoritarians want to hear, i.e. that it's the authorities' duty to control how individuals heat and light their homes. Now there are a number of ways individuals can reduce their reliance on governments and large power organizations. Time for aa get-off-the-grid movement to come to Japan. Long passed time for new businesses to challenge Japan, Inc., in energy and other areas.

Google:/Baidu/Yandex : off-grid, stand-alone energy systems

I wonder when was the last time you could see a starry sky in Tokyo? AC’s are far far more important for a comfortable modern life than a “beautiful cityscape”.

3 ( +7 / -4 )

Turn off the electric ads, screens etc for a month = Done.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

Ummm....no.

4 ( +8 / -4 )

Great, so minimal air con, windows open due to corona, 90% humidity and temperatures in the high thirties. Yahey!

1 ( +7 / -6 )

Wear a mask, turn the air conditioner off and don’t go out after 8:00. Some country…

8 ( +12 / -4 )

It's no wonder you don't see Japanese traveling abroad anymore. The Yen is high, prices of essential items have skyrocketed and now they're faced with an energy crisis.

I guess those good 'ol days of flying to Hawaii with your friends and family on long luxurious vacations and buying Chanel and Louis Vuitton are long gone.

-7 ( +8 / -15 )

Why can't they restart nuclear power plants in the name of national security and bypass all the legal wrangling???

4 ( +9 / -5 )

Plenty of power! They are just trying to soften up the people to nuclear power station restarts!

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

But the Australian ABC tells us all the time that "renewables" are cheaper.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Japan seems to be going full socialist at present. It’s start to get quite alarming.

2 ( +8 / -6 )

Could this country be anymore dated ? Please get some young people in higher positions, really need some fresh ideas. “Cool biz”, what’s going on?

5 ( +10 / -5 )

Stay off your computer Japanese and dim all the billboard in Tokyo

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

Shop lights off when closed

I wonder when was the last time you could see a starry sky in Tokyo? AC’s are far far more important for a comfortable modern life than a “beautiful cityscape”.

That sure would be a beautiful sight

No, we’ve had 40 years warning to do something about burning fossil fuels and didn’t

The lovely people wearing the funny shirts have had ten years to rebuild nuclear with newer and safer technologies. They failed to do so. So here we are. What happens when the government effectively does nothing.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Watching the news last night, they want to blame many people for working from home for the big increase in electricity demand. I love how they will always find some scapegoat for their incompetence. There was and still is a pandemic, and people are trying to stay safe, thus they are working from home.

As others have said, use the nuclear power plants that are sitting idled. They are as much a risk idle as they are up and running. This is insane!

2 ( +4 / -2 )

@Derek - agreed; somehow nobody seems to be talking about how they've increased the standard indoor temperature to 26-27 not just in the summer when saving power, but all year round. It would be more tolerable to endure high indoor summer temperatures in an effort to conserve energy if we had corresponding cooler indoor temperatures in the winter... but we don't; the cold-blooded lizards rule society all year long while everyone else is covered in sweat even in winter.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

@Frank Ellis

The Yen is high

Err... No. Try again.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

They've been asking that for the last 10 years or so.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

NO!!!! I am not sitting in a boiling hot room!!!!

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Not wearing a mask indoors could help people during summer months to lower the AC. And help the environment by having less litter on the streets, billions of tonnes if microplastucs in the ocean and in our bodies. Then people probably will use less AC due to climate change reduction strategies. New Cool Japan. Where masks are the new office ties.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

My battery connected to solar panels will provide all my home lighting needs and more tonight.

The means to store generated power is possible in the present.

Why isn’t it being utilised?

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Japan already has LNG facilities in Russia but they should have built a gas pipeline through Hokkaido to supply our needs. Also, need to get nuclear plants back up and running. You will see the big mistake Europe will be paying in the next few months from shutting off gas and oil from Russia. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Nuclear power is the cleanest, cheapest, efficient, and reliable source of energy. Replacing them with solar and wind is going back to the dark ages.
