The government on Monday said it had chosen a 4-hectare area of national forest land in Tochigi Prefecture as a candidate storage site for radioactive waste from Fukushima Prefecture. The area is near the town of Yaita.
It is the first time since last year's nuclear disaster that the government has publicly announced a site for waste storage.
However, the announcement seemed to take Tochigi officials by surprise. Vice Environment Minister Katsuhiko Yokomitsu outlined the government's plan to build a storage site by 2014 to Tochigi Gov Tomikazu Fukuda who in turn informed Yaita Mayor Tadao Endo. Both men later told reporters they were surprised at the decision, NHK reported. They also said it will be difficult to secure the approval of local residents for the storage site.
Environment Minister Goshi Hosono, who is also the minister in charge of the nuclear crisis, had previously said that the government was looking at candidate disposal sites in Miyagi, Chiba and Ibaraki prefectures.
The ministry said that around 48,000 tons of waste containing radioactive cesium of over 8,000 becquerels per kilogram needs to be disposed of, NHK reported.

All of these situations that involve the Govt. and local towns/Mayors, always follow a similar pattern about "getting approval from local residents".
In the end, it matters not, as plans go ahead regardless.

Wtf! Isn't there enough space in the area surrounding daiichi? Why do they need to move it? It looks like the theory of the gov. Trying to increase the level of cancer within the whole country by spreading the material around so they have plausible deniability is true. If they can destroy an area of national park for this badly planned action then why can't they build geothermal plants in national parks to give Japan a chance at the readily abundant power available in onsen areas?? This is another perfect example of why the gov and tepco need to be charged with nuking Japan. Get approval from local residents... The locals will say we are concerned and the rest of the countries sheeple will say "shoganai" nothing will change and it'll be done here then the next area then the next without giving 2 or even 3 hoots about the damage being done. Come on sheeple!! Tell the dankeis "no more!! Retire peacefully and let some new intelligent people consider this problem, and not that crack pot in osaka!!"

There's something tragic about a cultural imperative which insists all of Japan should share the fallout from March 11, whether it is dumping waste, burning debris or actively marketing food from the affected area. it makes no sense but that doesn't stop it happening. Bizarre.
SushiSake3
What is the problem? Tochigi will soon be able to promote their region as having 'plentiful and abundant nuclear radiation.'
wha-? Here's a smart idea - but I know it's not original: why not build a museum - make it The Tochigi Nuclear Radiation Museum - on top of the proposed storage site and plant lovely flowers all around it?
[sarcasm off]

Scandalous.
Wherever the waste is now, just KEEP IT THERE. Dig a big hole and fill it all in with concrete. Why on earth would you want to start transporting it all over the country? Why on earth would you want to try and convince local residents to accept such waste into their neighbourhoods? Finally, after the huge cost incurred following the earthquake and tsunami etc, why the hell does it make sense to build a number of storage sites in different prefectures?
I repeat - scandalous.

From the NHK new report it wasn't clear whether to the Tochigi site will be for the radiactive ash and sludge generated by sewage and incenterator facilities in Tochigi or if it will include ash and sludge from other prefrectures. Does anybody know for sure on this point? This story makes it sound as if it is all coming from Fukushima. I don't think that is 100% correct.

Keeping the nuclear waste inside the restricted area in Fukushima may seem a sensible option. After all, nobody is going to live there for a while and it is much easier to police (as access to the whole area is forbidden anyway). Is there any reason for the waste to be disposed all over the country ? (apart from the stupid conspiracy theories)
Scrote
Unbelievable. There is a huge area around Fukushima that nobody will be able to enter for years, yet the doofuses in charge decide to move the waste to somewhere uncontaminated, instead of keeping it in the no-go area.
They will never be able to "gain the understanding" of local residents with such a stupid, half-witted plan.
Ivan Coughanoffalot
They also said it will be difficult to secure the approval of local residents for the storage site.
But luckily, a sufficiently-stuffed brown envelope to the right people will make approval from local residents irrelevant. This country is committing suicide.
tokyokawasaki
I see the brown paper 'cash stuffed' bag has also landed in the hands of a few 'ahem' local officials in Tochigi..... Whoops how cynical of me... I mean the public are all behind the idea of dumping nuclear waste in their forests...
waltery
Keep it all in one place, simple and safe.
Thomas Anderson
I'm assuming that the nuclear waste has to be kept in a geologically safe place where there is a little chance of having earthquakes, etc. for say, the next 1000 years. Unfortunately, such a place doesn't exist in Japan.
It looks like these guys just picked the area at random...
Cricky
Collection and transport from an already no go zone to a pristine National Park. Makes perfect sence????
tmarie
And the government continues its challenge to make all of Japan unlivable. Between this, the burning of debris, the spreading around of contaminated food.... Honest to God, why is this allowed to happen??
MasterBape
tmarie, it happens because there is no strong objection.
Japanese people need to be led, and when the leader of the town (Mayor) is persuaded (bribed) in its favor, then the people just go along with it, reluctantly, but with a feeling they can't do anymore.
The Govt. knows this, that's why it can come up with such absurd plans.
For a nation that is supposed to "love nature", people have a funny way of expressing it.
I do agree that this should be contained in Fukushima. And the conspiracy theory is valid, IMO.

From JapanTimes article on the same subject.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Japan?
In_japan
This "nuclear waste" belongs to TEPCO. All TEPCO official's houses should be the best place to dispose it.
Thunderbird2
So with the area around Fukushima contaminated, they want to contaminate somewhere else too? Since Fukushima is pretty much a lost cause why not just bury it there?
