Japan plans to stop power firms building coal-fueled plants that are inefficient and dirty as it manages the competing demands of cutting greenhouse gas emissions while stepping up use of the fuel after the Fukushima disaster, officials said Friday.

Right, this coming from pretty much the same government that came up with the idea..(more money wasted)

This is the government that will now push even harder for nuclear plants in the wake of not being able to have fossil fuel plants built.

Abe will get what he wants one way or another.

The coal plants are being built BECAUSE they have shut down the nuclear plants. They are not talking about not building fossil fuel plants and turning on nuclear, they are talking about preventing companies from getting around regulations on the coal plants they build. The government's goal is to hopefully kill a few less people as they keep them safe from the horrors of deadly radiation.

The government aims to have coal account for 26% of the electricity mix by 2030.

A shameful aim ...nothing positive with this, given that the world needs to reduce Co2 emissions by at least 80% by 2050

Chugoku Electric is building a coal-gas fired plant. Much like wood-gas I imagine. Don't know the details about the pollution but my guess is that's the reason for the new idea.

It'd be pretty cool to see buildings themselves harness power. A turbine section that can intake air, solar panels and Conductive coating can all be applied to a certain degree to reduce the demand on the coal/nuclear plant supply.

What's up? The temperature? In northern California the temperature was 48 degrees on the back deck. Nukes, solar and hydro are the only way to survive.

Is that sarcastic? Coal power plants actually kill a lot more people due to pollution than nuclear power. The danger of radiation is much exaggerated, but even it weren't, the reality is that coal power plants expose people to more radiation than nuclear power plants as burning coal sends radioactive carbon isotopes in the air.

@kchoze Yes, that was 100% sarcastic. Burning coal to keep people safe from radiation from nuclear plants is the modern equivalent to burning witches or throwing virgins into volcanoes to keep the Gods happy.

It is a high time to build a pipe for getting cheap gas from Karafuto.
