My Japanese girlfriend at the time warned me that because I was a foreigner the Japanese police might arrest me if I cycled too close to the palace. ... I don't know if that's true

Your skepticism is well founded. It's not true.

I run there and around the other place regularly, as do a whole lot of visible foreigners. The police will nod and say good morning, if you do the same. Just don't try rollerblading. They are worried you'll smash into people.

And?

Toasted Heretic - Love graffiti, hate tags.

Is there a difference? So, you wouldn’t mind if a came to your home and illegally sprayed ‘graffiti’ all over your car? Graffiti or tagging makes no difference. If they are not commissioned works of art they are illegal acts of vandalism and destruction of public and private property. The offenders of any graffiti should be severely punished.

Thank you to people who cleaned up the mess.

And there are no CCTV cameras on the wall around the emperors estate?

Recently, someone's being graffiting white vans and trees in my local area in south London. Writing squiggles on vans is a bad one!

Love graffiti, hate tags. Neither should be on national monuments, I believe. Your local tagger isn't that awful tox, is it?

Keep Graffiti out of Japan. Unless your Banksie.

Banksy is fine, sure. But his message is often lost in the scramble and greed to own his work.

Sorry, in my opinion, if it isn't allowed to be there, then it's vandalism. Even if it's pretty. You can't just say it's ok to break laws because what someone did looks nice.

It was just a red line spray painted along the wall. "Graffiti" requires more creativity than that.

What was written on those stones are most important.

This is just someone walking down the sidewalk waving a spray can of paint. What's with the "romaji"...which automatically casts aspersions on all the foreigners walking around.

Saw on TV.

A wobbly red line sprayed by a walking drunk.

This is national news?

I used to cycle around that area. My Japanese girlfriend at the time warned me that because I was a foreigner the Japanese police might arrest me if I cycled too close to the palace. Why asked I? Because you're a foreigner and maybe a security risk said she. That seems fair said I! I don't know if that's true but it always used to make my trips more exciting lol. Last weeks report on the Mickey Mouse face on Tottori dunes failed to note it was signed "hiromi" in hiragana.

Cars tended to get keyed or stolen or vandalized, where I used to live. Depending on the worth of the vehicles. Never graffiti or tagged, though.

Graffiti or tagging makes no difference.

Well yes, they do. Graffiti is art and has been with us since cavemen and the pyramids. It's more visible in urban areas and I'm fine with it, as long as it's not vandalism of protected/listed buildings areas. Tagging is just a nuisance and it's often ego-led or gang related. Nothing artistic about it, at all.

Lol

Don't worry, the will use the peoples' taxes and bring this thug to justice.

I am sure that they will outsource the best cleaning staff and use biodegradable cleaning agents as well.

There are a number of places in Tokyo with graffiti. Is the idea to keep the Imperial family in a complete bubble from the realities of society? Not sure why this is newsworthy.
