Everyone loves strawberries, right? Not only are they pretty hard to beat on the deliciousness scale, but they have the ability to ward off allergy symptoms and can even occasionally taste like peaches. Not bad for a little red fruit – or big red fruit if we’re talking about the Guinness World Record-breaking strawberry recently harvested in Fukuoka.
The strawberry in question is so heavy that it shattered a 32-year-old record for the world’s heaviest strawberry previously held by a whopper of a berry grown by G. Anderson of Folktone, Kent in the UK. Anderson’s prize berry was a massive 231 grams, but Fukuoka farmer Koji Nakao’s record-setting berry was 250 grams.
The key to the colossal berry is a growth deformity brought on by a response to frost damage, causing several berries to fuse together and create one monster-berry.
The misshapen strawberry is a whopping eight centimeters tall, 12 centimeters long and has a circumference between 25-30 centimeters.
The Fukuoka Amaou variety of strawberries are known nationwide for their large size and their sweet delectableness. So, how does this giant Aamaou taste? According to Nakao’s teenage daughter, the lucky girl who got to have the first bite, it was “oishii” (delicious)!

How much yen would that have sold for?
Bogi
Sounds like she has the talent to star on about a thousand different J-tv programs.

If the farmer had a contract to sell direct to leading Supermarkets and all his strawberries were this size and shape. the contracted Supermarket would reject them. The contracted buyer would then not allow the farmer to sell them on to another market. Yes this is correct. The farmer would not be able to given them away at no cost. Like giving the reject fruit to the Farmer next door to feed his live stock. This happen to a Carrot Farmer in Australia when the Supermarket rejected his carrots for being to over size. He had to mulch $15,000 worth of carrots back into field.

It's a long way from Daichi.

It's just an unprecedented amalgam of smaller strawberries conjoined together for some unexplained reason. Nothing to worry about.

The kid ate it! NOOOO!!! They could have sold it for a fortune and retired. If a square watermelon can fetch a billion yen, then imagine what this red monster can pull in.

Strawberries are highly perishable, and there is no system in place to quickly auction off one freakily large berry (short of Yahoo auctions). I am sure they milked all the publicity they could out of it, though.

Size isn't everything.....

I've seen them sell Prime Deluxe Strawberries for 50,000 yen each and they are half that size. They are packaged in a private wooden box.

There's always the freezer. Toss the next big mutant in a ziplock bag and use it as a gimmick to get visitors. If you freeze it, they will come.

man if a fruit had that much of a deformity id be reluctant to actually eat it. after all what has caused it to become like that!?
Tokiyo
How do you know its G.M? There are plenty of ugly things that are delicious?
Kobe White Bar Owner
Yer your right it may not be GM but it sure doesn't look like nature planned it to come out, looks like the bunch of strawberries morphed into one.
