A gun was accidentally discharged after a police sergeant dropped it at a police station in Kembuchi, Hokkaido. No one was hurt, police said.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 6:10 p.m. Sunday, Fuji TV reported. The sergeant was finishing his shift and was taking the bullets out of his pistol, when it slipped from his hand and fell to the floor.

The bullet that was fired went through the ceiling where it was retrieved on Monday afternoon.

That must have been a wake-me-upper

Yikes! Their guns are actually loaded.

Why was the weapon not placed on safety in the first place?

Not all handguns have safety catches so without knowing the type of gun ....................

Luckily nobody was hurt. For me this was good news. I love Japan although I can be very critical. Japan never was a gun country (yes I do know history and yes I do know why Japanese people had no guns) and this is another reason to like Japan. I lived for years in the Fukui mountains in an old farm house. Most of my neighbours had shotguns for boars etc. Seldom used, really locked away and very carefully handled.

Probably happens more than you think. Still remember the video of the US policeman who shot himself in the foot while teaching kids about gun safety. Also remember a video (from long ago) of a certain B. Mott (the former-RSM of the Guards Division in the UK) having a fit after some poor squaddie had an NG (negligent discharge) during some ceremonial practice.

That is probably the first time this year that a police gun has been fired in Japan. In other countries, this event would not be newsworthy.

I feel that police here are trained to handle weapons but not trained in a great way. Why was the weapon not placed on safety in the first place? You can still remove rounds from a weapon that is placed on safety.

Didn't a cop use one for "stress relief" only last week?

Wow. . . a Segeant too. Not a rookie. Make him do 1,000 push-ups.

Cue the circus music! The j-flops use six-shooters. To remove the bullets you have to open the drum, which disengages the firing pin. This fact makes the cops' story highly unlikely to damn near impossible!

The gun didn't "accidentally go off". It's not like it normall plans to go off, given that guns don't have will. The officer accidentally dropped the gun and it went off. Headline sure likes to spin things as though it was some strange act of nature and not just a moron who should have no access to a lethal weapon.
