Haneda Airport strengthens security in response to France terror attack

The National Police Agency said Friday it has strengthened security measures at Tokyo's Haneda Airport in response to the terrorist attacks in Paris earlier this month.

Officers are asking incoming foreign tourists the purpose of their trip to Japan and handing them English leaflets, instructing them what number to call in the event of an emergency or if they see anything or anyone suspicious.

You must not be reading the news. Islamic State terrorists issued a direct threat against Japan recently.

To all the people ridiculing "asking people the purpose of their visit": simply engaging people in conversation and reading non-verbal cues to profile potential threats is one of the main methods employed by El Al airport security in Israel. And if anyone knows what they're doing, it's those guys.

Non-intrusive profiling will always beat the kind of en masse, aggressive checks untrained staff perform at US airports.

How about Narita airport? All the years of traveling to Japan, it's very rare the immigration people have ever asked or said anything.

I've never understood the point of those checks at Narita Airport station. It's as if terrorists or other criminals don't have any form of ID to show.

Japan hasn't done anything on the international scene to actually show up on the radar screen, so, as others have pointed out, only local terrorists have shown any interest in the country.

Maybe they should just hire a tv crew to stop foreign looking arrivals and ask, "Why you come to Japan ?"

Perhaps, but I for one am grateful that the re-entry cards I have to fill in everything I come back to Japan no longer asks the question, What is the purpose of you coming to Japan. I get sick and tired of having to write 'Because I live here'.

Why all this enhanced security, fingerprinting and mugshots,

No idea, but I wish the EU would do this to all citizens of USA and Japan.

Why all this enhanced security, fingerprinting and mugshots, when Japan had not had any terrorism except for its own nationals? Isn't fear mongering a form of terror...... ?

Alistair oh, wait...

Oh yeah, asking them for their purpose and handing out leaflets ---- that will do it! Why didn´t we think of that before...

but hosting thousands of US troops and Tokyo's importance to the stock market means Japan can not be ruled out as a tempting target for jihadists.

If that was the case, wouldn't Japan do better to improve security measures in Okinawa?

I agree an attack is extremely unlikely but hosting thousands of US troops and Tokyo's importance to the stock market means Japan can not be ruled out as a tempting target for jihadists.

Will they use lie detectors too? Just in case someone doesn't tell them the real purpose of their trip!

Yes, yes. 'Cause the violent Islamists No. 2 target is ゴーマニズム宣言.

Laughable.

The only people who committed acts of terrorism inside Japan were themselves Japanese - Aum Shin Rikyo. Japan has little to fear from Islamic terrorism. These measures are just an unnecessary waste of everyone's time. After all, Japan has had fingerprinting in place over 7 years now

If the fingerprinting and mugshot measures can't guarantee Japan's safety from dangerous foreigners, how on earth is an innocuous question and a leaflet going to reassure anyone? Band Aid courtesy of your local constabulary...
