Hmmm... sounds like one more part of an overall far-east military clear-up after embarrassing accidents in the air and on the sea.
Toasted Heretic
Good. Now deploy the rest of them elsewhere.
BertieWooster
Ah, the Osprey, isn't that the one nicknamed the "Widowmaker?"
maybeperhapsyes
We military Types accept the risk.
And talk about it many years later with likeminded men who made the call
unless you served... you’ll never know.
englisc aspyrgend
That's someones career down the pan!
Like in most large organisations people get promoted to their level of incompetence!
CrucialS
No the Osprey is nicknamed the Osprey
Yubaru
And what is the purpose of making a Marine Corp Officer come across as a civilian?
And what is his rank as well?
nandakandamanda
So who is in charge of the helicopters then?
juminRhee
Are these guys govt employees or contractors? Usually, military members have rank (ie sergeant, lieutenant colonel, etc). Commander may be a title, or a rank (navy and coast guard only). As these were marines, that quite likely wasn't their rank.

No idea why the story didn't include their ranks, but executive officer (XO) is simply the position below the commanding officer (CO). There are ranks and there are positions. XO is a position in a unit.
From the story:* 'Christopher Denver, executive officer for the Okinawa-based tilt rotor squadron, has been assigned as interim commanding officer, the statement said, without further details.'*

@extanker and @yubaru
Tanker is correct, Executive Officer's are the Commanding Officer's right hand man and fulfil the duties of the CO in his absence. For Battalion and Squadrons an XO is usually a Major and a CO is usually a Lieutenant Colonel.
It's very odd AFP didn't include the rank with the names. I'm positive the IIIMEF press release would have that information.

And in a bit more casual form:
"Chris took over bryan's job after he totally bombed it."
Ranks, please... ;)=
DAaron
This is common practice to relieve the commanding officer of a squadron after a couple of accidents regardless of the circumstances which are still under under investigation, it is likely that the CO will be re-assigned and forced out in this case, it serves to reassure the locals that people are being held accountable for mishaps.
The Japanese on the island aren;t happy with the Osprey's being deployed there...come to think of it they are happy with the Sea Stallions, the Huey's, the Harriers, the F-35's, the F-18's the C-130's, the Sea Cobras...I'm not sure anything would make them happy short of all the Americans leaving.
Yubaru
Sorry, thank you for taking the time here, and I am aware of the rank structure. Articles here often, one might say, far too many times, leave out pertinent information, and do not get updated.
Swenson in this case is a Lieutenant Colonel, and his temporary replacement is a Major.

It wasn't all that hard to find out, just lazy reporting here.

@Bertie:
I hope US military helicopters will not take. Over the nickname of "Widowmaker".
BluesBLAKE
Does it not seem odd that all of these accidents are happening in Okinawa and nowhere else around the world and Okinawa is the only place that wants these type of aircraft and US military in total removed from their area????
extanker
That's because most of these incidents barely qualify as 'accidents', but Onaga plays them up like helicopters are crashing into children's hospitals.
