Heavy rain continues in western Japan as typhoon weakens

Torrential rain continued to fall in western Japan on Friday, for the fourth straight day as the season's fourth typhoon weakened into a tropical depression.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said it expected up to 300 millimeters of rain to fall in Shikoku and 200 millimeters to fall in northern Kyushu and the Kansai area by late Friday afternoon. Deluges are expected in Yamaguchi, Hiroshima, Shimane and Wakayama prefectures, the agency said.

Television footage showed torrents of muddy water carrying uprooted trees and other debris as rivers burst their banks in parts of Wakayama and Yamaguchi prefectures.

The meteorological agency said winds of up to 100 kilometers per hour and five-meter-high waves are expected throughout the day. It issued alerts for mudslides, strong winds and swollen rivers.

The tropical depression has an atmospheric pressure of 994 hectopascals at its center, the meteorological agency said.

It isn't even a typhoon.

By the definition of the JMA it is, to everyone else it's a tropical storm.

I can hear my tomatoes, cucumbers and corn wailing もいい! It was nice for a day and a half but three days straight here in Nara. I've had enough.

Different country, different scale in terms of strength/intensity - by definition. Even though it was just a tropical storm/depression, that combined with their annual monsoon (rainy season), it was enough to cause havoc. I love mainland Japan winters but hate their summers. I will be transiting the Tokyo area on my way to Singapore and I dread the few days layover I will make for my trip to Singapore. Tokyo gets very hot. Incidentally while we are on the subject of weather (though slightly going off topic, sorry), Okinawa is often the second coolest spot in all of Japan second only to Hokkaido. Many people don't believe it, but after the rainy season, watch the weather reports and you'll see. Anyway, stay safe and yes, don't climb roofs to adjust TV antennas!!!

Okinawa is the SECOND coolest spot in Japan?!?!? Not a chance. I live in Okinawa. My wife is from Nagano. Nagano is FAR cooler than Okinawa in the summer!! Not even close, homie.

Torrential rains right now in Tokyo.

I know that in some areas, as reported in the article, the rains have caused a lot of damage, but I am so relieved to have these few days respite from the recent heat and humidity. I could do with a few more days of rain like we've been getting in Chubu region..,

Next week I'm heading to Yamaguchi for annual summer vacation....oh joy!

It was downgraded yesterday.

It was never classified as a typhoon by the JTWC or any other sites that put out their information in English. It was still called a typhoon until TODAY by the Japanese weather talkers.

Yes lots of rain! SO what do idiots in Shinjuku, SHibuya etc..do?? Walk around with their long umbrellas in super crowded areas swing their umbrellas as if they were samura swords, and all you need is one of these idiot fools to stab your leg, chest, eye etc..with an umbrella! Some people are just too stupid, the more it rains does it make these people more and more stupid?? Heavy rain, so go out and ride your bikes in Shibuya at full speed on the sidewalks dodging THOUSANDS of pedestrians!! This city of Tokyo is only getting worse and worse IMHO.

True. They have to scaremonger a bit, of course.
