High radiation levels detected in Tokyo park

A high level of radiation has been detected in a park in Tokyo's Toshima Ward, municipal government officials said Friday.

Officials have closed the park, located in a residential area of Ikebukuro near Shimoitabashi Station on the Tobu line. Fuji TV reported that one spot near the playground measured 480 microsieverts per hour or nearly half the recommended annual limit of exposure.

Officials said a club was dug up and said it was radioactive with radium.

Although the radiation level does not pose a health risk, the ward has closed the park until it can decontaminate the area.

A better explanation would be useful.

Probably a jar of radium paint like the last hotspot that was detected in Tokyo (hidden under floorboards in an old house).

@Tessa, I think your student is doing the right thing.

My favorite thing was that safety fence put around the children's playground like they only had enough fence to close off the small playground itself, as if this fence would keep the radiation from escaping. The park itself was still open, just the children's playground was blocked.

Safety at its finest. But, I'm sure itll be ready to host an Olympic event like Fukushima also wants.

Hot spots all over Kanto.

Oh, and you believe this?

Yeah, it's happened several times before.

Dropped by a drone?

Nothing to see here, Tepco will denied any connection to Fukushima, They will try to say" its from Hello kitty dump!!"

And the people who think Fukushima is a giant coverup that is still affecting Kanto will assume anything radioactive comes from Fukushima. Evidence is completely optional.

It's not difficult to believe there are many hotspots around Japan because of Fukushima.

there seem to be quite a few people like this. One of my students, who hails from Tokyo originally, is currently pregnant. She refuses to go to Tokyo or northern Japan even to visit her parents and won't take her baby there either.

I was just at Shimo-Itabashi station a few hours ago. You can see the park from the platforms, and I noticed the playground was closed off - with the same orange & black striped barriers they use for construction sites. I figured they must be stripping the playground out and replacing it or something... then I got home and read this!

What is wrong with people. Fukushima isn't a secret operative burying radioactive substances under clubs all over Tokyo 200kms away. There are lots of old substances that are radioactive that we don't use any more now that we know better. Sometime these pop up in rennovations or whenever we go digging around. http://io9.com/seriously-scary-radioactive-consumer-products-from-the-498044380

Also, you will likely get more radiation exposure flying to Tokyo, or getting an X-Ray, than walking past this park / club.

5 is the max, not half. Unless they changed it over the past few years.

I wouldn't be surprised if the government were spreading, concealed radioactive waste, around the country. They didn't exactly come clean about Minamata disease either.

Officials believe radiation could be coming from a substance buried beneath the soil.

hybrid fertile soil producing radiation instead of radish :(

Heck, by the time 2020 comes around people in Fukushima will have to take MOPP Level 4 precautions at the rate radiation is spreading.

Time to force children and ambassadors to play and hang out there to 'prove' it's safe!
