If there's one building in Hiroshima that should be demolished, it's the one directly behind the A-bomb dome when viewed from the Peace Park. It's really ugly and ruins what should be a contemplative experience.

Both were military facilities.

Perhaps sell the bricks in auctions for peace?
Keep the deformed windows. Bet there are 50 museums that would love to have one.

Both buildings were nearly 3 kilometers from the bomb drop. The hypocenter was primarily residential. Honkawa Elementary School was just meters from it.

Agree. Unfortunately though if “its ugly and ruins the view” were the standard for making these decisions they would have to demolish like 99.6% of everything that has been built in Japan since 1945.

The bombing was a seminal moment with historical and cultural significance not just for Hiroshima but all of Japan, and the fact the buildings had national uses, to me says they must be conserved at all cost. There are untold stories upon untold stories in these buildings.

But, I admit, Japan sees things differently depending on who the stakeholders are (cough, cough, are developers circling above?).

Both buildings were part of japans military monster. They should have been demolished decades ago

You gotta let go of the past at some point to fully move forward! But not forget.
