Spent a year in Hokkaido (Otaru). Lovely, traveled and hiked all over. But 6+ months of winter, starting in October--let's just say a year was enough, snow on the ground into May...

Much prefer the cold in Hokkaido to the humidity in southern Japan; at least you can dress for it.

Hate it!
The snow is a pain for anyone driving a car or living in a house. Living here for almost 13 years and I am really starting to get fed up of it. I didn't care much when I didn't have to often deal with snow, but really this is a pain now. And the winter is just too long in this island, the snow was still melting in some areas in Hokkaido back in June......
Anyway, I woke up this norming and there was no trace of any snow in Sapporo, so it's good I haven't had to see it. That would be quite depressing.

No snow here in Okinawa yet :-)

one of the BEST reasons to live in Japan - Winter sports - couldn't imagine living here without that to look forward to -

Once nice thing about Hokkaido is that at least in summer, you don't experience the hot and humid summers common in western Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. When temperatures in Kochi (southern Shikoku) can reach 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) plus 60-plus percent humidity, you appreciate the summers in Hokkaido a lot more.
Besides, Hokkaido has some of the best winter sports locations in the world--it's not a coincidence they held the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo.

YES!!!!!! That means there will be plenty of snow when get there with my board in December. Can hardly wait!

Ah, that would explain why so many people in Tokyo are wearing mufflers, beanies and gloves and complaining that it is so cold, "oh, samuiiiii!" I guess the fact that is only 15' and just a little chilly is irrelevant. I really can't undestand why these people complain so much. In summer it's, "Oh, Atsuii! In winter it's, "Oh, samuiiii!" It makes me wonder if these people are ever happy or, if they just live to have something to whine about. Yeah, summer is hot and winter is cold. Your point is what?

Hokkaido has to be the best place in Japan, according to my personale taste. ^^ I love cold winters.

I've lived in Northern Finland so very used to these (and worse) conditions.

No mention of whether the snow is early, on time, or late. Either way it'll be blamed on global warming.

Curious....does it snow in early December in Sapporo?
