Climate change. More white stuff. Today in Kanto. I'm gonna move south, like to Costa Rica.

The only stupid ones here would be any construction companies that don't build the house roofs with a 50 degree angle or more...

re: "And yet some foreigners would call the owners stupid for trying to get the snow off their roofs before they collapse." No quite the opposite, why stay in that area year after year, knowing full well what to expect, many foreigners would say, move out of there, you're only asking for trouble and those buried are fully aware. Its like moving to an island and building a home on the beach knowing full well of swelling tides and storms but you get flooded every year until one day a major storm surge levels your flat home. pack up and get out

That bring us a good point - what is the rate of snow-clearing accidents in Hokkaido? Here in Tohoku, we seem to have a lot - but there don't seem to be a lot reported from Hokkaido.
Poor reporting? Or perhaps good house design?

KnowBetter is absolutely right about helping out your neighbors. My neighborhood in Sapporo would always have many who would be helping those in need. And I, as the American 'foreigner' would be right out there with them. We don't usually get 2 meter dumps of snow as in the eastern part of Hokkaido, usually less than a meter, which is quite enough for one day.

I'd be up on the roof getting that snow off as soon as possible too if I was up there in Hokkaido. I'd also offer to help out my neighbours especially the older folks who I feel would be a risk of injuring themselves.
When that much snow falls, just about everything grins to a halt so if you are able to help out in your neighbourhood, it's always much appreciated by those than aren't able to because of age, illness or disability.

I just saw this town on the news - absolute insanity. Houses buried up to their roofs.
And yet some foreigners would call the owners stupid for trying to get the snow off their roofs before they collapse.
