”As a rule, I don’t wear masks. Only when I’m forced too, ie at Uniqlo, or on an airplane”
completely reasonable

“If you had not noticed, people in Japan have gladly worn masks for years.”
Not to the extent they are now. I certainly don’t share their enjoyment

”Japanese laws cannot force anyone to wear a mask.”
Amen to that
Paul
Or is it possible they visited one of those Hostess bars because the only way they can get near a woman is to pay for it...

Nothing keeps you cooler than not wearing a mask, the do-gooder foreigner mask police is out of control, luckily for us in Japan, the only thing they can do is whine, Japanese laws cannot force anyone to wear a mask.

"Next, Japan keeps mask wearing warm in the winter. This mask culture is getting out of hand."
but in Japan 1200 covid 19 deaths
In USA 180,000 deaths
I think I prefer the mask culture to death culture.

This outdoor mask thing is only some western countries mostly EU countries.
These are the same places that told Japan and South Korea they were both wrong and masks were not needed (well basically told the Asians).
Suddenly they changed their minds and now these same countries have all these experts on masks.
Amazing how just a few months ago all these countries said there wasn't enough research, evidence or specialist, ignored the countries in Asia that did have all the research, evidence and specialist, and now they again know more than places like Japan that have been using masks for decades.

This is pure madness. There isn't any scientific evidence that shows that wearing a mask outside makes any sense. None. Neither any large infection cluster has ever been detected from originating outdoors. However, the scientific literature is filled with research showing that this virus (like many other respiratory virus in fact) is a pathogen that infects people in closed, confined location with poor ventilation or air filtering and with a lot of people talking or singing/shouting. Period. This is because of aerosols pilling up there and people being exposed to them for a long duration.
In outdoors, aerosols carrying the virus are immediately diluted and dispersed which makes an infection extremely unlikely. The world is becoming crazy with decision makers being totally nuts by imposing authoritarian measures on people just for the sake of showing that they are doing something.

@Goodlucktoyou
I keep hearing foreigners say they see discarded masks everywhere.
But I have yet to see more than one or two on rare occasions.
Where are all these discarded masks? Where do all these people seeing this hangout?
Sorry not buying it, look at the streets of Tokyo now or before Covid-19, they are and have always been extremely clear especially by large metropolis standard.
Suddenly the people of Japan that for years carried their trash home (including masks during flu season), or place garbage in convince store bins are now just tossing masks everywhere!
Again not buying it.
Yubaru
Where? Just want to avoid it! If I see anyone discard a mask on the street, I would say something!
wraither
And they have the nerve to charge plastic bags for 3 to 10 yen each?
Goodlucktoyou
Even though there is no conclusive proof of face masks and SARS-CoV-2 prevention effectiveness, billions of dollars are being spent on masks and mask accessories.
After one use they are discarded. When I go to town, I see hundreds of discarded masks on the street. If infected they will spread the virus for up to 72 hours.

Yesterday's news at my work was, that 2 guys in a neighbor factory got infected.
Reason:
They refused wearing masks.
So, I really recommend, that before complaining, how bad the virus is handled in Japan, please first start to do the Number one basic prevention: wear a mask.
YeahRight
That's why I don't go to Uniqlo or on an airplane, or anywhere else that requires masks. (Of course, I am more of the "stay home" kind of guy. I just don't go out except when necessary.) I can't see anything "cool" about wearing a mask. Especially those creepy smile masks featured in another article this morning.
Yubaru
Clarification here; INDOORS in public places!
Yubaru
What country are you talking about here? Sure as hell isnt Japan! Oh and one other thing, many "other" countries have made wearing masks INDOORS mandatory, not outside.
Christopher Glen
Agreed, people are actually enjoying their “face-coverings”.
