I just spent two plus weeks in Okinawa, in the area of Chatan. "American Village" is a fairly large tourist spot, with large hotels, food, and shopping complexes plus it's next to the spring training site for the Chunichi Dragons baseball team. The place was a veritable ghost town. Normally, they have a large Korean and Chinese tourist population And with the American military restricted to base, these places had spotty Japanese tourists, and that was it. Once the American military personnel were allowed off base, things picked up a bit, but still nowhere near what it normally is.

I did appreciate not being surrounded by a lot of people, but the sheer amount of businesses shut down was horrible to see.

Onsen don't try to make you wear masks these days, do they?

My fam and I used to be regulars at high-end ryokans and hotels now our opinion is that they can go bankrupt for all we care, my family and I vowed to only stay at Airbnb's until the masking circus is over (if ever). We despise masks and most hotels force you to use one in public areas of the facility.

Some hotel make really good money from quarantine that being forced by government

Isn't that just tax payer money though?

If that's their salary, that's not a "high skilled" foreigner.

ROFL, you really don’t have much clue about salaries here.

Even when Japan finally decides to “open”, it’s going to be a slow, pathetic trickle of business income for this maimed tourism industry.

Did they count love hotels?

hey, just askin'

Geee, groundbreaking news here.

i thought numbers would’ve shot up during a tourist-less pandemic happening.

I do hope things get better soon.

And by “tourism”, I also mean business travelers. My hotel never knew the difference and I always mixed the two. I imagine regardless, I spent more than 99% of the Japanese population does on “tourism” per vacation day.

For all those who say international tourism isn’t significant. Here you go. Hotels occupancy cut in half for 2 years.

High skill foreigners never did …

Yes, they did. In 2017, the number of Highly-Skilled Foreign Professional visas issued (not counting the visas for accompanying family members), rose 43.3% over the previous year. In 2018, the year-on-year growth was 45.5%.

But they’re mostly not the white Westerners in the finance industry that you are probably referring to.

Two out of every three were Chinese, 77.4% graduated from graduate school, and 64% majored in natural sciences. Their average salary was 7.57 million yen a year.

High skill foreigners never did, and still don't come to Japan in any meaningful numbers. Which is the opposite of places like Singapore, Hong Kong, or even Thailand.

Why would highly skilled or specialized foreigners come to Japan? Their talents would be wasted here.

As for hotels not getting enough customers, well pandemic. That and despite the fact that this sham of an SoE is a request only, it's enough to trigger the sheep mentality in many locals to stay in their own neighborhoods.

Yes, like the fascism-sponsoring APA Hotel. Probably Abe had a hand in this. Each bottle of water has the female owner's face all over it and those revisionist books have been hidden while foreign 'guests' have been quarantined there.

The LDP will make sure their cronies are not left in the lurch by an economic downturn. Unlike the majority of the public.

Pure socialism for the rich.

With a pandemic going on and a closed border how is this a surprise.

The government has also suspended its subsidy program to support local tourism in Japan, despite its hopes to resume it as early as late January.

Japan hotel owners: Curses! That coronavirus interrupting our income stream from the public again!

Before COVID-19, Japan had become a very popular destination. Visitor arrivals had risen every year from 6.2 million in 2011 to 31.8 million in 2019.

Even those choosing to stay increased. The number of registered foreign residents living in Japan had risen every year from 2012 to 2019.
